Pertronix Ignitor II?

I'm thinking about switcing over to Pertronix. I've read the archives and I think it a worthwhile upgrade. I checked out their website and they have a new Ignitor II system. Has anyone used it? I'm also getting their Flamethrower coil. Might as well. Thanks.

petronix

Yes I have it!
I installed it in my 1972 280se 4.5.
Bought it from Eastwood. Special order.
It was less that a new module.
You need to file down the rotor to make it fit all the way down. You also need to fabricate a gromit to make the distributor water tight. The one supplied does not fit.
Throw every thing else in a box. Hook up your 12 volt source and your done.
You may want to make up a wire harness if you want to keep the origional parts.

Give the folks at Petronix a call. They are very helpful and, if you send in the distributer, they can probably find a fit. Also, seriously consider the high output coil.....it's well worth the money to eliminate plug fouling.

As a plus, stick to the copper plugs as the platimiums don't seem to be worth a hoot in these engines.

Litton, I do plan on purchasing the coil (Flamethrower) and I already changed my plugs to Bosche Supers, but now wish I bought the NGKs as the Archives seem to like them more. Oh well. I can replace them for less than $20 later. I think I'll just go with the Ignitor I for now. I don't want to be a guinea pig for Pertronix!

So I'm about to order my Pertronix system. Where do you find the distributor number? Is it read from the top on the silver disc next to the cap? Thanks.

The only potential problem you may encounter comes from the large number of variations that exist with Bosch distributors. The Pertronix will work with many Bosch, but, I ran afoul of the Bosch system with my 230/8. Pertronix felt the unit for the 230S would be the correct item, but my distributor uses a special shaft and base for the points that caused a fit problem with rotor and magnetic ring. Once the ring was placed low enough to allow the rotor to clear the cap the magnetic ring did not align precisely (this is critical) with the pick up, and as a result the car would not start. After several calls to Pertronix and them sending what they felt was the proper part to make the match (did not work), I gave up and switched back to the original points. To their credit, Pertronix guarantees a working system if you will send them your distributor. I chose to not do this.

FYI I have used the Pertronix I on several other cars and believe it to be the best single improvement item I have ever used. In this case I made a decision to keep my old 230/8 100% original even if it requires more ignition maintenance over the long run.

Also FYI, the Pertronix I is excellent, the Pertronix II is an advancement that enhances dwell and coil saturation but this is IMO an improvement that a stock engine would seldom need. Given the choice, I would take the P-I and save the $$... FWIT.

Called Pertronix themselves and they gave me the part numbers. For the Ingnitor I :1863, and for the Coil: 40511 (black housing). No Ingnitor II for now. Rep said my new wires will work with Ingnitor I.

Ordered it and should be here in about a week. All together with shipping it was less than $100, including the coil bracket. Can't wait. Thanks all.

The number is on the distributor. It is kind of hard to see since it faces the engine but patience and/or mirror will help.
If Petronix numbers don't match with your dist. you may have some problems. Check archives. They told me to send the dist to them too but they wanted over $200 to design one to match my dist.
You may also want to look into Crane ingnitors. I have one but have not installed it yet. My pts. are just fine so I'll do it when they wear out.

Since your car in German, you ought to go with Bosch. NKGs go well with Nissans, Toyotas, etc...
