Making progress on the W111 Coupe

Made some good progress on the coupe over the last week. Finished the rear brakes (rebuilt calipers, new Ate pads and Ate rotors. Had previously done all the flex hoses). Replaced the rotted Alpine speakers that a previous owner had cut into the front kick panels, with an old school look pair of Blaupunkt XL's. Took care of the worn out alternator pulley and crumbling wiring at the alternator, and rebuilt the electric fuel pump a week ago. Replaced the rotted/missing shifter bushings prior to that, but left the front tunnel area apart pending the next bit of work.

Next project is to rebuild or completely replace the heater unit. The blower motor is dead and blows the fuse immediately. I have a complete unit coming from Denmark, and it left New Jersey on Friday, so should be here fairly soon. While I've got that all torn out I'll fix the seized fresh air flap cable.

I also need to rebuild the front calipers because they've never been done, and the right side drags slightly. I have the kits, so will probably do that this coming weekend.

It's nice to have it driveable again and had it out yesterday with the run roof open, enjoying the weather, and running errands.

Sounds like fun. I can't wait to commence progress on mine. If yours does not have AC and you wish to add I have a pair of 111 correct Kuhlmeister under dash units for sale.

Thanks Tony. I've been on the fence about installing a/c. Other than a couple 3 months of "winter" here, the temps generally warrant a/c. I've had some pretty miserable drives in the car, like one trip from here to Lake Tahoe during Memorial Day '92. 7+hrs non-stop, and the 5+ from here, up Interstate 5, and through Sacramento, Placerville, etc. were pretty bad. So part of me wants a/c so that the car can be really comfortable on long drives, or just any time. Although around town I typically have all the windows down and the roof open to show off that poleless roof line. The other part of me wants to keep the car "original" AND not hang 100lbs of extra stuff on the car that I have to work on and around. Decisions, decisions!

Currently looking forward to the arrival of the heater unit, so that I can put the interior back together, have a functioning fresh air flap, and move on to doing some fun stuff, like re-upholstering the tops of the door panels and rear interior quarter panels with the half hide I purchased from World Upholstery.

Rebuilt the right front caliper after work tonight. I'll wind up doing the left front as well, but it appears to be working fine, so it's not as pressing as the other 3 have been. Nice to have the brakes all freed up and the car rolling and stopping normally.

Next project is the heater unit and seized fresh air flap actuating cable.

Heater box R & R, and rebuilding is a lesson in tedium.

This weekend, I was able to get the fresh air flap cable freed up. (Kroil for the win!) Was also able to replace the fan motor in the heater box. The car is up and running again. The dash and center console reassembly will have to wait until this coming weekend. Nice to have these 2 big jobs done finally, and once I get the interior put back together, the car is back to being as daily driver as weather permits.

Finally, it's a real car again. Nice to have this all behind me, and a good feeling to be able to drive it whenever I want. Took it around town for a little warm-up, and then out on the freeway for an hour; windows down, roof open. She's just as loud as I remember!

Now all I need is an NOS body shell, carpeting, headliner, seat/door/dash/rear qtr panel/parcel shelf upholstery, weather stripping, and all chrome pieces. lol....please just shoot me.

Hello,
I just picked up a 63 220 SEb. Can you please provide more details on the 'fresh air flap' you mention.

How difficult was removing the heater?
