these things are hit and miss carbs. Watch ebay, they appear there every week. A few weeks back there was a webber with the necessary adapter plate to make it fit.
Your best bet is a rochester or holley and adapt it. Check out the archives here. If you absolutely must have 4A1, I can sell you a brand new one, still in the box for 400$. But trust me, you don't want it. Get the carb conversion. -CTH |

Unless you want an ABSOLUTELY ORIGINAL SHOW WINNER CARB on your car, I'd follow CTH's advice. If you need a new carb, all I've heard of about Solexes are how people hate them - opposed to the Zenith lovers around here. And since no 280S will ever be a show winner... well...
You want the best power and economy, that you can easily tune and find parts for right? Not something that is nearly impossible to get any parts for. Who's telling you you need a new carb - a mechanic, or you tried rebuilding it and found it to be unrepairable?

if i had a car with one of those i would put on an edelbrock quadrajet replacement. the quadjet is a pretty good design with well known low quality. the edelbrock will be a much higher quality. (i am assuming it is still available). if you go that way you need the jet needles for a 67 pontiac sprint. i did a qjet on my 74 bmw 3.0 liter about 15 years ago. mechanical secondaries. you had to let it get up to about 3k before opening the secondaries or it would bog down, but when you did, it would just howl! and go very fast. that was with modified to presmog specs on the dist too.

As I Have Told 280s I Have A Brand New Solex 4a1 Carb, That Was Bought From The Agents, For My Car, W126 280s, That Was Stolen Before I Could Fit The Carby. I Am Prepared To Sell The Carb To Him For $300.00
I Dont Think You Will Be Able To Replace The Carb For That Amount, And It Stays Origanal. |

If you get stuck and your carby is playing up ( too rich etc ) it can be fixed. Although the other guys mention Holley conversions etc it's going to cost you plenty down under as Holleys are seriously expensive.I have had a couple of M110's with the holley and it's the expensive 400CFM 4bbl carb you need. That will cost you value of your car...and linx, now called Redline performance ,Sydney, made an adaptor to suit. If you need the Solex 4A1 ,get your money back and buy CTH's ,I know this guy and he's straight up!. ( right Charlie? ) In the mean time ,read this everyone,I used this info to get my 280 running perfectly ...once it starts on cold mornings. http://e21.tricord.be/e21/about/m20/solex-carb-notes.php |

I've been doing this for 20 years, that's pretty bent, so I guess I'm straight.
You can get a dozen used 4A1 carbs and the chances of finding one that works better than what you have is slim. Like I said earlier, I can had you a pristine new one or you could spend about a third of that fitting a "good used" US carb. Most of that money will be for getting it mounted and have the linkage fit. This is not a job for the average mercedes mechanic. You want somebody that knows 70s US cars and has a decent head on his shoulders to not cut the corners too much. A happy medium is a Holley carb with a Jam adapter kit. Brand new, it's closer to 700$, but it will give you a lifetime of service. They can be found used. -CTH |

Separately, if you've been done wrong by JPP and can document that, I'm sure the folks that manage this board would like to know about it. Also, In looking at some of his prior posts, he's in South Africa. I'm sure their authorities would like to know about it too. -CTH
