Looks like that has seen better days! The shift rod should be straight not bent down 45 degrees... I would ask for a picture of the gears inside by removing the shift selector cover before making a bid.

Checked my Haynes manual and it shows 2 different variations of the G72 4-speed manual transmission - one with a straight link and one with it 'bent' down, just like this one. Suspect the straight one is for the sedan and the 'bent' one is for the SL.

Ah thanks for the clarification. There is also a third cover for the column shift that has 2 levers instead of the single rod.

My columnshift '60 Fintail has a side-cover gearbox and they were also used in manual floorshift W114/115
My Haynes manual refers to them as a G76 Happy Motoring, Mark

Was there any difference between the sedan version and SL version of these trannys? I have one that is still attached to a low mileage 280SE engine I'm thinking of selling. I was going to covert the AT on my 280SE coupe but decided it was too much trouble. I tested it before pulling it form the car and it is in excellent condition. It includes the shifter and the clutch mechanisms.

The 4/5/6 cylinder four-speeds from the early 60s to mid-80s are pretty interchangable because of length and bellhousing. (The M189 bellhousing is the notable exception). But, there are differences in
- Clutch mechanism (mechanical vs hydraulic, slave cylinder placement, throw-out. - Drive shaft connection (pre/post 1968 or so). - Top vs side gear selection. |
