glow plug conversion

Hi guys,
Since fintails originally have no time relay, do I really need the one that comes with the upgrade kit? Here`s what I intend to do:just replace the ballast resistor with a 50 ampere fuse and connect the new pencil type plugs the right way..my glow plug indicator(the glowing wire in the dash)is not working,is it so important.Would by-passing it do any serious effect on proper function of the system???
Any thoughts???The preglow system is similar to the early w115 diesel models, simply no time relay(I`ll just count 5-6 seconds ).
Thanks!
Vengerov, w110 200D

What're you tryin to do?

If putting newer pencil plug engine into older loop plug chassis, then you'll probably need the relay system too.

Older style loop glow plugs mainline mainline through fused ignition switch/hotwire from the battery, but newer style have electric boosters in the system - that's just my take.

Never attempted such a swap myself but I'd be reconnoitring exact replication of newer pencil plug electric system, as close as possible.

Hell, maybe getting the 'upgrade' install kit for loop to pencil plugs.... then using the wiring and throwing the rest of the kit in the trash might be the answer.

Am assuming you are putting newer engine into older chassis.

Yeah,I made the conversion...As I said ,om621 don`t have any relais so I don`t seem the point in installing one, just got the 4 plugs ,connected them the right way -et voila! It works. The ballast resistor prolongs the glow time,so it`s gonna be replaced by the 50A strip fuse from w123 I`ve already ordered...Hmm,I don`t see anything that could go wrong, and why do I need the relais when I just can cout several seconds???Thanx for the replys, guys!
