Planning on rebuilding a neighbors car. I know the tie rod ends need replacing. Very noticable shimmy at 62-65, and tire wear indicates that more probably needs to be done. I have access to spring compressors and presses. Are changing the other susension bushings/attach points beyond the capabilities of an experienced DIY mechanic? Any helpful tricks of the trade? The neighbor called around to get quotes. A reputable mechanic said it sounded like the "brake Backing Plate" was loose. From what I remember from doing the brakes, the calipers mount directly to the spindle assembly. Only other part is the sheetmetal sheild that protects the brake rotor. Any idea of what he was refering too? Thanks

What the tech was referring to are the brake strut mounts. They are responsible for holding the castor in spec. They will knock very loudly if faulty. Also it takes an experienced tech at least 4-5 hours to do a suspension rebuild with all of the special tools.
The work I see the most is Tie rods, drag link, idler arm bushings, upper control arms, ball joints and brake strut mounts. ------------------ Benzmac: ASE CERTIFIED MASTER AUTO TECHNICIAN LEAD TECHNICIAN FOR 14 BAY FACILITY MERCEDES SPECIALIST 8 YRS PARTNER IN MERCEDESSHOP.COM |
