Hi all;
Can anyone help me on this problem? The forward end of the driver's door handle pulls away from the door ( about 1/2 in.). I pulled the door panel off and looked into the little hole provided and can see a faily large screw securing that end of the door handle (anchor?)but it was tight.Has anyone had this problem,or know what has to be done to fix it. The car is a 1989 300SE. Thanks. ![]() |

Door handle
Just a thought but check to see if someone has removed the handle before and got their screws (length) mixed up.I don't know if the setup for the door handle is the same as my 82 300D,but there are two screws holding the rear of the handle in place.I'm sure these are a different length so maybe they got put back wrong.I'ts got to be worth a look.Bear

had same problem on driver side door of my 87 560SL, took the door panel off and tightened the big screw that was holding it down and all was fine after that....moderate hassle removing the door panel, make sure you follow the instructions that are in this forum.

Thanks for the input Guys.I checked the screw at that end of the handle and it was tight.I guess the only right way to do this job is to pull the handle completly off.This looks like it's going to be longer than a 30 min. job so since it doesn't appear like the handle will fall off the door,I am going to put this project on hold for awhile.

Misunderstanding
Funflyer, what I meant was check the screw at the front isn't to long 'cause it would be tight if it was to long and was screwed right in.If you used a shorter screw it would pull the handle closer to the door .I hope that's clear now:-Bear

I understand what you are getting at Bear,about the screw length.Did you say that you have had those screws out?I am wondering what will happen to the fitting it passes through when the screw is removed and how much of a hassle it will be to get another screw in there?

My experience is with 123 door handles having changed the whole handle to replace the door lock.If the handles are fitted the same in both models you should be able to take the screw out,and not affect the fitting.If you're worried about dropping the screw inside the door put a bit of chewing gum on the end of your screwdriver.Dont take all three screws out at the same time and you should be alright.If you get really adventurous and take the whole handle off be very gentle there are breakable parts in there!Alternatively if you get really desperate see what the set up is on the other door you might be missing something.Hope this has enlightened you some what Funflyer.
