300E 2.8 Timing chain
1993 300E 2.8 with 200,000Km (120,000mi.)
When do I need to replace the timing chain? Is there an easy way to see if it needs to be replaced? A small oil leak has developed, right front of engine. Looks like either the front cover or head gasket. major job??? ($) Thanks jackD |

I have never seen a timing chain FAILURE on this engine. However have seen several with over 200,000 miles that did need a new chain, as the cam timing was more than 4 degrees off.
Head gasket leakage is VERY common on this engine!! ONLY "ELRING" brand headgaskets ARE modified to hold the oil pressure from causing leaks.

I have recently compared an Elring gasket to one purchased from MB. The MB gasket has two perforated stainless inserts right next to the front corners (the lower one being the place of most leaks).
Do you know if there are more than one Elring? Do the Elring that you use have these inserts?
