87 300E Wacky Electrical Problems....

Hi Everyone,
So, I took the 300E out of storage last week and noticed my fuel gauge was acting funny. Yesterday I noticed it would read empty every time I applied the brake. No big deal right... Gets much worse!

So, I opened the sun roof and it works great as usual. When I get home I try to close it. It won't close! It will creep an inch or so then stop. Almost like as if the battery is dead. I look down at my center console when I push the sunroof switch and for about 5 seconds afterwards everything is blinking on and off like a Christmas tree! My lights/illumination were not even on to begin with. So then I drive the car to my shop. While driving the turn signals start acting funny. The clicker relay sounds funny and the left turn light inside the car stays lit dimly. Oh, also my brake lights go on when I try to close the sun roof. Is my car possessed or what? All these problems seem to be related as they all started massive issues all at once. If anyone could give me some tips on where I should start looking first, that would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
Adam

Check the battery voltage, sounds like a low power issue. With a fully charged battery and running the engine at fast idle the voltage should increase to near 14.2 volts. If not there is probably a alternator issue.

Let us know and we will work from there.

Check all your earthing points.
Battery to body, and any brown wire to body point.

not positive but there is a relay, i think the flasher relay that controls alot of the dash, if it goes out i think it could cause those problems. I am not 100% sure but worth something to look into.

That's exactly what it was. I removed my trunk liners and found the ground point for my fuel sender/sun roof/turn signals/brake lights. The bolt was loose... I just cranked it down tight and everything is fine now! I wish my sub-frame mount was this easy to fix. These horrible Wisconsin roads loosen up everything.

Glad to be of help.

A lesson to us all.

Particularly the earthing point on the manifold area near the IACV. If the bolt and terminals are corroded, your engine will not run correctly as the CIS references this for some components.
