Should be a nut on the back side of the grill holding it in place. Probably 7 or 8mm, as I recall.

If it is like the 560 SL, Then it is just pushed out. The SL has a hole in the hood that a nylon gromet is installed in. The emblem has a post that inserts into the gromet and expands it, holding it in place. It takes a lot of force to push it back out from the underside of the hood.

I changed the standing star on my 99 C280 to the
emblem. On this car the emblem consited of a emblem two plastic gromments, a plate and two nuts to secure. I changed the old emblem on my 79 450SLC and all that was need was the emblem for the car an one plastic grommet, however it does not hold well, but that is what the dealer and a few after market dealers shows as the assembly. I think I'n going to glue it down as water is getting under there and I have a rust free 450SLC and want to keep it that way.

On the 123s, though, I still think it is held in place by a single nut, attached to the stud coming off the back of the emblem. I have seen cases, however, where someone tried to take the nut off and, because of corrosion, broke the stud off. If you are seeing white glue-like stuff around it, perhaps that is what happened--someone broke it off, then glued it to keep it in place. Just speculating.

The original emblem only had the plastic grommet
in the front hole. But when I went to the dealer to buy a new emblem and grommet as I figured I might as well replace this also. They had three different part numbers for the emblem the first two wer superceded by the third. Also list was the grommet and a "clip", but the clip was superceded by the grommet. So I bought two grommets, problem is the emblem doesn't stay in the grommet either, and the new grommet is too big for the top hole. I tried slipping a screw clip over the top prong, but I couldn't get my hand up there and you working in the blind as the top hole is under and forward of the the opening for the latch. I took off the latch holder as it is screw to the hood, but still could't get a clip on it, I tried pressing the other grommet from underneath, but it fell off. I did get an extra emblem fromthe dealer as I brought all the pieces back, they told me to keep them and gave me another emblem. One thing I did notice, both on the original emblem and new emblem after I tried to install them, and took them out the front prong was bent forward, meaning to me the two holes are wider then the emblem prongs. On the second emblem I am going to try and cut the prong down the middle with a dremel and a very small cutting wheel and attempt to spread them with a screw driver once they are in. Or if worse comes to worse, I try cuttin the prongs off with the dremel, at the emblem is base metal and soft. Also even with the emblem sitting as far down as it will go into the gommet, it still sticks up a pit. this is the third emblem I have tried, the first one I bought online and is OEM, but as soon as i startes to press it in it fell just popped out. So I don't think it is me, and there is either another emblem or another holding piece that is not listed. Go to www.coolcarparts.com and take a look at the emblem kit. It states with the emblem you have to order a clip with a part number and a gromment, but the clip turned out to be the grommet. I know confusing, but also furstrating. I have never had this problem with emblems before.

That is what I did, as the original emblem had
the one grommet. I am still wondering is the emblems I bought are the correct ones, considering the part number business I wrote of? Do you happen to have the part number for the emblem you installed? Thanks!

I did some research in some Mercedes Books I have
and I think I have the wrong emblem. The pictures of the SL's I saw had a crhome emblem, which was on my car. But I thought it had the blue paint worn off after 26 years. Now I am thinking I took off the correct emblem for nothing?

Try rubbing alcohol as this is the safest on the paint
or 3M General purpose adhesive removed, I believe this is safe for paint finishes also. DON'T USE ACETONE as it will melt the paint off. It you used Crazy Glue then good luck.
Also the emblem you got from Fast Lane is the same emblem a Mercedes Dealer will give you. I been this route.
