Low crime (except for Memphis).

Sounds like a state with above average functionality of state government.
Lack of an income tax does not necessarily mean you pay less in tax. TX does not have in income tax but our property tax is outrageous to make up for the lack of income tax.

Effective tax by state. Does not work out the way many think.

I live in a fairly high tax rate state. So what? I like living here, and I am in a position to be able to comfortably afford it.

We hope to downsize, but not to save money, which we would, but to move to one floor living in a senior community.

We are, I like to say, trapped in our own frugality. We have loosened up a good amount since we retired, but there are levels of spending that I just can’t bring myself to do. My car is my splurge, but the loan only costs $500/mo. If I can’t/won’t come up with a big enough down payment to get the loan at that amount, I don’t buy the car. I also refuse to have two car payments at one time. Yes, we could “afford” more, but, as I said, we are trapped in our own spending ways.

Reality Again

I know many who live in those no / low tax states and they're all screwed up because their red state is so poorly managed they're always having their hands out to the others states and Federal government for $ to get by .

Very typical of red states and the gop : do nothing, block anyone who tries to do good then complain and blame others for the mess YOU MADE .

Yes, I pay large taxes to live in California but I've also lived else where and seen how bad those places are (even the nice states) compared to here .

They're all envious, that's why they bee-atch and moan instead of getting off their fat @$$es and working to make a better life like I did .

Californian's moving to Tennessee

They are generally welfare states obscured with “rugged individualism” rhetoric

Cuomo is right about how much his state contributes vs theirs. They essentially run a deficit, supplemented by federal handouts.

I have never lived in California, but I’ve worked there months or weeks at a time in both Southern and Northern California so I’m not without experience and knowledge of the place. I began going there in 1979 and there was much about it that was wonderful. I really didn’t even notice any political or much social bias in those days. The last time I worked for a California company was late 2003 and much had changed my that time.

Since I wasn’t a resident subject to taxes and the like, my time there was not exactly like being a citizen.

I fully expect that much has changed in California since 2003, and not all of it has been for the better. Californians are not only moving to Tennessee, they are moving lots of places.

I love the Pacific Coast, Monterrey/Carmel in particular, and the Sierras are nothing short of magnificent. I particularly enjoyed the Bay Area in the eighties. Even though it was not my kind of place socially, I spent a good bit of time in the Inn at Laguna on the beach while working for an Irvine based company in the nineties and it was great. In the late seventies I spent weeks at a time living in the Buena Park Hotel next to Knotts Berry Farm and would occasionally see a day clear enough to see the hills in the distance.

So, I have lots of pleasant memories, but would never want to live there, at least in the cities. I’ve been to 38 states, and about thirty of them are places I would rather live than to be buried away in the liberal cities of California. Rural CALIFORNIA I would enjoy as long as the tax base wasn’t crazy. There are some much more morally grounded people in the rural areas.

As for the people, like anywhere else there are good and bad people.

I expect that the mass exodus from California has more to do with the liberal economics than anything else. Who couldn’t enjoy the Pacific Coast or the Sierras?

California used to be the place to live, however that has changed over time. I feel about Cali about the same way I feel about most places.

Cali would be a GREAT place to live if it wasn't for the GOVERNMENT.
