I am really worn out on physician style instructions on TV about how to use this or that drug. Will scrutinize any drug that's recommended to me by a doctor pretty closely. Two over the counter meds that look really sketchy, just as an example of the money that can be made on this stuff: Prilosec: I know, I don't like heartburn so why not restrict secretion of digestive juices? I've had gnarly issues in that at times and it was poor diet, weird food fetishes such as ice cream. Changed my habits and it went away. The other - Prevagen. Word I've read is that there is really no evidence that it works yet they've sold $165m of the stuff. Oh boy, an ingredient from jellyfish, what a breakthrough. And all these people wanting to believe that it's helped them.

You’re 100% correct Mr CMAC2012. I had horrible GERD for years. First error was going to the VA for years where I was prescribed Rx for years. Never a question or an interest of the why I had GERD by the buffoon who called herself a doctor. When I decided to start investigating my health issues I came across apple cider vinegar with the “mother”. I took it for six months and my GERD went away forever.

The hard part is knowing how many years I did really stupid stuff to my bod in pursuit of cheap pleasure. I cut myself some slack as a kid, when I drank Coca-Cola and Mt. Dew like it was going out of style. Definitely did not do my teeth any good.
As an adult however, different story, it's on me. I read the book 'Sugar Blues' at age 26 or 27, this nearly 40 years ago. Excellent book, well researched, it blew my mind, I quit sugar, and coffee cold turkey the next day, had bad headaches for about 3 days, on the fourth I woke up taking deep relaxed breaths like I couldn't believe. Were golden years for me. Suddenly girls were into me noticeably more, I had lost about 10 lbs I didn't know I needed losing, my face looked better. Bank tellers would tell me I looked better than my drivers license photo. But holy crap, a couple years later I fell off the wagon. Fell in with some cool friends who were into pot and espresso. Jeez I got higher than a kite first time I did coffee, cookies, and pot. We don't realize what strong stimulants coffee and sugar are until you stop them for a long time and then try it out for old times sake. I've gone back and forth over the years. I hate to tell you how many years I was into practically a pint of Haagen Dazs every day. I estimate I spent $10 to $15k on the stuff. One every day, that's $1,000 a year about. Would wake up with serious acid. Also Reese cups. Easily a few $hundred a year for years. About a year ago I stopped my one beer a day with dinner, also quit coffee (again). A few days later I noticed I was walking with vigor like I hadn't in some time. But a week later I went back to both. Quit both again a few weeks ago, way down on sugar. I make my own dark chocolate, supposedly has some benefit. I make it with cocoa butter, coconut oil, grass fed butter, honey and maple syrup, not too sweet, cacoa powder, also some almond butter and tahini. Noticing some benefit. I bought a 16 ouncer of my favorite brew a few nights ago. Funny how I don't like it anymore. Felt really wasted after, this about a 7% abv brew. You may have noticed, I don't like Trump but it is interesting that he's a lifelong tee-totaler - no drink, drugs, or tobacco. And he is one robust sum beach for his age, I'll give him that. AC vinegar good stuff in many ways. FWIW, if you have teeth issues, be careful with acid drinks. Acid is what causes tooth decay, it's a by product of breakdown of food residue by bacteria. I still drink the EmergenC vitamin C powder but I use a straw and immediately brush with baking soda. This after a dentist said my teeth showed signs of acid erosion. Supposedly orange juice is just as bad for your teeth or worse than soda pop.

LOL. I was sugar addicted until 7 July 2018. Phase III of let’s be healthy again. On 6 July I weighed 206.8 at 5’9”. A little disgusting fat body. On Monday, six days ago, I weighed 174.8. Been maintaining around a 1,200 calorie a day intake, collectively 50 grams of refined (added) sugar since 7 July. My body has slowed down somewhat losing weight. First 25 days (7 July to 31 July) I lost 19 pounds. August was 12+ pounds lost. So added sugar is bad news. Goal of 155 pounds by end of October as September is my last CR month. Coffee may stay however. I take it black. I’m making the big assumption that come 1 October I will be able to do some PT. Berberine and cinnamon with turmeric ginger ACV are your friends if you maintain consistency

Not shabby. A couple of years ago I went on a push and got down to 174 (6'0"). No beer, way, way down on sugar, starting combining foods according the the Herbert Shelton method (the Fit for Life authors drew heavily on Shelton).
Gradually got lazy, back up to 190. Now after a few weeks of renewed discipline down to 182. I'm thinking 165 might be getting close to flat tummy territory. Dunno if you've heard of Thomas Delauer. He's supposedly the most subscribed personal trainer on the web. His program is improved nutrition and intermittent fasting, a lot of which means skipping breakfast a few days a week. He lost about 100 lbs a few years back, not really sure how long ago, he doesn't look that much younger in the before pics. I did fasting when I was in my early 20s to lose weight after a junk food spell. It makes a lot of sense in the Paleo approach. Hunter gatherers often had periods of really needing a meal. So our bodies evolved around that reality. One of the main reasons I quit coffee, I like some fruit first thing in the morning. DeLauer is death on too much fruit, says its sugar will keep from losing weight. I suspect he's right. So I do a small fruit smoothie. I took a pic of a common combo to send my sister. A small pear or half of a normal sized one, some rehydrated goji berries and cranberries (both supposed to have a myriad of benefits) maybe half of a dark plum, about a third of a peach (in this one) and an ounce or so of Trader Joe's frozen arboreal wild blueberries. I don't know how they can sell them at such a good price ($3 a lb or so). These are tiny like wild berries often are. I would often do that at about 6 so it would be somewhat digested when I'd have the main breakfast a couple hours later. I was loath to leave the house without that as that was when I had my daily coffee. Not big on most commercial coffee. I've been doing 'bulletproof coffee' style for a couple of years - no cream, instead some grass fed butter and coconut oil and frothed up in a blender. W/o coffee every day, oops, the coffee withdrawal headache. By quitting coffee, I can do the fruit smoothie and then not eat again til noon or 1 to 2 pm, this with a lunch I took with me. As a recent reformed sugar addict, you might like 'Sugar Blues.' The before and after pics of author William Duffy on the back are pretty wild: ![]()

Phase III is a pleasant way of saying I got healthy twice before after July 1999. Around two years ago and sometime around 2012. I take a more primitive approach to eating since I like things very simple that even a caveman could understand it. I program out six days in advance what I will eat and my supplements. I eat from 0600 to 6pm. I “fast” from 6pm until 6am. I take in 150 grams of protein a day. I’ve eaten probably 5 “regular” meals since 7 July. Now I eat something every hour or every two hours. For example 6am is always a protein whey shake which is 220 calories and 50 grams of protein. A few hours later may be a banana at 100 calories. A few hours later may be an avocado et cet. I do weigh and measure portions. Supplements 3 times a day. Almost no processed food anymore. Drinks are limited to water or just tomatoe juice or Grapefruit juice. 4 oz of GF juice mixed with 2 tablespoons of ACV three times a day. No taste of ACV
Back in the day I ate garbage all day long and stayed 155 pounds. But I guess running two 10k a day plus 2 to 3 hours of significant PT a day made a difference. Lol |

12 hours of fasting a day is good. I often get home late and have a late supper. Not good. All the more reason to have a light or no breakfast. In my 20s I would fast a day or two maybe once a month, not a complete fast, maybe an apple or pear.
He's a character but not really a dummy - Mr. T went for a long time fasting one day a week. Meaningless trivia, he and I were born the same day, same year, (my profile date is about a year off) so I want to give him a nod for good thinking. ![]() DeLauer is no shrinking violet either and he's big on fasting. I meant to post a vid of his above, here's one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzbRp0DvNVw

I've been doing IF for years and it's worked out well. I initially lost about 60lbs when I was more disciplined, but have maintained it since.
Biggest issue now is irregular things popping up, usually due to work (dinner with clients, traveling across time zones, etc). Done right, it can be amazing. That said, many many people I've talked to have trouble stretching out the fast times without feeling like garbage. For me, it's almost seems more natural to do so than to eat 3x a day. Now, a company I do business with specializes in paleo (and other diets) meals, their stuff is pricey but worth it. I'll commit to full paleo someday, so far I have had some excellent wholesome meals that I'd like to adapt to cook by myself.

In high school I was a runner - cross country and mile. I looked for books by respected coaches and came across Percy Wells Cerutty of Melbourne. Two of his athletes were big - John Landy, 2nd 4 minute miler and Herb Elliot - 1960 Olympic 1500 meter champ - broke his own 1500 world record there, almost unheard of to set a world record at the Olympics, earlier broke the mile record by almost 3 seconds
Fascinating guy, the coach I mean, one line of his has stuck with me and I would have done well to heed it much better than I often have: 'eat only when summoned by the angel of hunger.' Too often it's: time for lunch, better eat now or I'll be hungry later. Just a lot of eating by schedule, not by what my body is saying. I'm working on preparing better and better portable lunches. Hard to find the stuff I want out in the world - off the shelf, ready to eat anyway. Lately I've been going with two boilded eggs and some smoked salmon or sardines. Sardines are touted as super food for men by some. Google Craig Cooper for a rap on sardines. Co-founder of Boost Mobile and a health and wellness advocate. Fit looking dude, early 50s. Mark Hyman is big on nut smoothies. I make a large one and freeze about 5 or 6 helpings. I thaw them, add a bit of tahini and hemp milk and have a good lunch on the road. Going to get back into hummus. I'm getting major dental work, nutritious stuff that is easy to chew is big. One of my clients in Palestinian. She gave me some of her homemade hummus the other day. Best I've ever had. She said she'd give me her recipe. Her husband is Greek, 100% and runs (2nd gen) a popular deli in SF. Those folks have some food going on.
