Early 70s "personal luxury coupes" - which ones?
Which of these do you like (if any). This was just before American cars started getting crappy....
These are highly collectible cars these days... These are from the 1971-73 era. Chevy Monte Carlo: (1971) Monte Carlo: (1973) Pontiac Grand Prix: (1972) Olds Toronado: (1971) Buick Riviera: (1971) Cadillac Eldorado: (1972) Ford Thunderbird: (1973) Like the phone??? ![]() Mercury Cougar: (1973) Lincoln Mark IV: (1973) Plymouth Satellite Sebring: (1973) Dodge Charger SE: (really cannot think of any other from Dodge in this range) (1972) Chrysler 300 (only one I can think of only in 2-door only form) and this is a 1970, because I cannot find a 1971 photo and 72 this model was gone I think.. AMC Matador X (WOW!) (1974) Last edited by 86560SEL; 01-22-2009 at 05:49 PM. |

Nothing there for me either. I would argue that they were already crappy by this time......

Yuck to all the above; not much was worth owning in the 70s.

1973 Olds Cutlass Supreme. The first new car I ever bought. This is similar, 'cept mine had wire wheels. Nice looking car. Ran fine. Sheet metal was wafer thin. Rear window rusted & water leaked into trunk after about 5 years. I think the MSRP was around $3,500.00, including air and 8 track.

the mid 70's Monte carlos were fun. the young guys that drove them thought their cars were really hot. I had a '74 Datsun 260Z. Those guys would always try to run me on the expressway. most of them would run out of steam between 85 and 105. I wasn't even out of third gear yet! With my little 2.6 litre NA straight six.

I'd go for a 1971 Satellite Roadrunner or a Barracuda convertible.
http://www.oldcarmanualproject.com/brochures/Plymouth/1971/Satellite/index.htm My dad had a Duster when I was a kid. I loved that car and the logo on the trunk lid. ![]() ![]()

I liked the GM midsize Cutlass/Chevelle/LeMans coupes up thru 1972. Not luxury but they felt solid and had a wide range of power trains.

The '71 Riv' is really the most stylish of the group and I think still looks good to this day.

My personal preferences are
1971 Grand Prix SJ 455 HO. Great performing car with a lot of style 1970 Monte Carlo 454 Very stylish and also good performance 1970 Eldorado 8.2 litre all engine and leather 1972 Buick Riv The boat tail is awesome Gee, seems to be all GM so far... Going back a little further 1967 Olds Toronado /Cad Eldo. Same body style in a choice of front or rear wheel drive ![]() 1963-64 Buick Riv The original and still the best... 1962 Ford Thunderbird Best looking post Square Bird. 1964-66 T-bird Love the walking tail lights and the cockpit. 1966 AMC Ambassador Coupe 1965 -66 AMC Marlin Go back a bit more 1953-59 Studebaker Golden Hawk... The Satellite and Charger are more muscle car than luxo coupe. The Matador X was a nice try... The Barcelona was more of a PLC.

Riviera- hands down.
The mid 60's 'vette rear window, the sweep of the front fenders to the door and then to the rear like a Dusenburg....
