Dress shoes always annoy me... those square shoes look really dumb, and the pointed toe ones look like clown shoes at size 13

I will be interviewing with accounting firms for the most part. I like the idea of making a good initial investment, despite the cost, especially if it get my the job.

"So, how picky is the accounting profession with reguards to dress anyway? Thank for any information."
If you were the interviewer, what do you think they would be seeking in a new employee beyond the assumed excellent grades. 1. Somewhat low geek index. They want to try to figure out how introverted you are. Will you be able to get along with co-workers and clients. Smile. 2. Dress is important because most accounting firms send their accounts to a variety of customer locations. Based on my travels to customer locations in major cities over the last 10 years, it is obvious that things are more casual now. I interact with a few CPA's at these clients. They always were a tie, but often not a suit coat or sport coat. You can take the opportunity to dress more casually after you get the job, not before you get the job. 3. They want people who are ambitious, but moldable. Account jobs with CPA firms are brutal for the first several years, so they might ask you about just how hard you are willing to work. Like sacrifice all for the company. Tell them you will do whatever it takes. Don't ask about how much vacation you get in the first year! You can only quit if you get hired. 4. Try to demonstrate good listening skills. Pay attention and look the interviewer in the eyes. Don't look down or away when pondering you answer. 5. Get a hair cut and a manicure. The hair cut thing is not as applicable with today's hair styles, but when I interviewed with, at that time, Big 8 accounting firms, I got my middle 70's long hair cut shorter. Manicure sounds kind of overkill, but you have a lot on the line. 6. Buy yourself a very nice leather portfolio and carry it to the interview with a copy of your resume. If there is even a chance of rain, carry a nice umbrella. 7. Learn something about each firm prior to the interview. Then ask some questions that let the interviewer know you have done your homework. 8. Firm handshake, not limp noodle. Steve |

Almost as bad as avoiding eye contact. I remember reading once that one factor of miscommunication between Blacks and Whites, was that with one race, the speaker holds eye contact for the majority of the time, while with the other culture, it is the listener who maintains the eye contact. I suppose the other party completes the eye contact but intermittently looks down or away, as they contemplate the conversation. I forget which race is supposed to act which way? Constantly staring into each other's eyes seems more like a Honeymoon, than an interview. |

you can find very nice rockports.. i also have a pair of Brown Shoes that are even better fitting then any other.. now, if you're going for the highest end go with leather sole otherwise you can't tell what they cost.. i wouldn't sweat it..
clean shave, white shirt and a nice tie is what makes the difference.. if the interviewer is looking at your shoes.. he ain't looking you in the eye and i would probably avoid working for them anyway since they aren't judging you for you mind but for what you wear.. |

I really didn't mean constant eye contact. I was just trying to discourage looking off into space when pondering the answer. I always looked for something I call presence. This behavior is displayed when the person being interviewed seemed to have reasoned out the next question or topic before it is raised.
The last poster said " if the interviewer is looking at your shoes.. he ain't looking you in the eye and i would probably avoid working for them anyway since they aren't judging you for you mind but for what you wear.." He obviously has no experience interviewing and hiring people. This is the sort of anti-establishment thinking that many people use as their basis for in essence non-conformance. This thought process argues that appearances don't really matter. If you can't accept me the way I am, then go to hell. There is no problem as long as you are willing to accept lesser earnings and less career potential. If you want to succeed in a career like accounting, then you better act and dress the part. Rockports might be fine after employment is secured and you see what your peers are wearing, at an interview they broadcast average. You want to broadcast Fortune 100. Steve |
