Gas in the oil ?
Hi Gang,
My friend has taken his 82 380 SL to the dealer this morning because upon checking the dipstick this morning he smelt gasoline. He wiped it clean and reinserted only to pull the dipstick again and the same smell is present. Before they call him with a diagnosis I told him I would poll the experts and see if anyone had any ideas of what might cause this...and if the engine is going to be toast now. Again, just looking for advice to compare with the call, when it comes. Thanks for your help.

I'm not an expert but I'm thinking two things:
1. Extremely rich-running condition, and... 2. Well-worn piston rings. Excessive unburned fuel washing down from the cylinder walls and settling in the oil pan...this isn't doing much for lubrication either... ![]()

The easiest thing to do would be to pull the spark plugs and inspect them. You'll know if its running rich, has a fouled cylinder or whatever.
