Austin,

Yes my wife is also collecting manual and automatic watches, but it is a shame to see that ladies watches are not as collectible as mens. The only value they stand for is for the materials and precious stones some are manufatured with.

Favorite ? That is a hard question to answer. I believe that I center my attention on chronographs with two or three subdials, mechanical and automatics from the 60's, 70's and current models.

As for HEUER chronographs, HEUER is the last name of his founder Edouard HEUER. The acquisition of a majority stake by the "Techniques d'Avant-Garde" group in 1985 gave this company his current name TAG-Heuer.

As far as I know HEUER is a swiss company established in 1860 in Saint-Imier.

I'm almost wishing they made the standard Speed Pro with just a sapphire crystal, with a steel back. I suppose for "a small fee" the jeweler would install an Omega sapphire crystal. Maybe I should just see how the Hesalite holds up.
Sounds like a general opinion that if I'm going to own ONE "good" watch that I could do alot worse than a Speedmaster Professional.
I tried posting at an Omega website (not the company site) and no response. They probably get asked the same questions over and over from newbies that just want "one", when it's a watch collector forum.
Anyone ever handle an Omega X33?

Gilly

Although there are a lot of good mechanical watches out there, my dream watch is the stainless Rolex Daytona with the Zenith movement. It is a comparatively rare and sought after watch. Driving an E500 with a SS White Daytona on my wrist = total perma grin

My senior year of high school when I bought my watch, my friend and I were crusing around down town in some benz, I dont remember which one, but I was the passenger. I had my watch out the window resting on the door. The older fellow next to us (with a young blonde lady as his copilot) had the same watch as me, so I told him, hey nice watch. He looked at me and I think he was upset because I was so young to have the same watch he had...He should have just said thanks, nice watch you have as well....

I have a Hamilton Chronograph watch, automatic movement, saphire crystal.

It is a very old Ameican brand, but is now owned by The Swatch Company, which owns Omega, Tissot, and a handful of other brands.

Ernesto, I share your interest in vintage chronographs. Considering they are more complicated than a tourbillon at much less cost!!

I have a serious craving for the Junghans calibre 88

Dean,

I totally understand your interest on JUNGHANS chronographs.

The chronographs from this german company produced in the mid 50's went into the market with an official rating certificate from the watch-testing laboratory of Baden-Wurttemberg. On that decade JUNGHANS was by far the largest manufacturer of officially tested watches.

Personally, I find very interesting their Pilot's chronographs form the 50's that came with the Caliber 88, 19 jewels movement. A great chronograph with an outstanding design.

My Dad was a Certified Master Watchmaker, graduated from Waltham School of Watchmaking in 1948. He owned one of the premier jewelery stores in the Northeast, Was a Registered Jeweler also.

I have a few gold Waltham Pocket Watches from the 1880`s in mint condition. You won`t belive this but they keep better time than my Rolex!!!

Speedmaster, many other watches, more affordable USED

...check the "sales corner" on Timezone.com, as well as many of the online dealers in vintage watches. The Omega Speedmaster can be had in very good condition for $1000 or under.

I love old Omegas, American Hamiltons, a sprinkling of other top brands, and the two Rolexes I bought new in the '70s before they became insanely expensive.

I like Mercedes 123 diesels, have an old Packard, and a VW convertible I bought new in '73...watches follow this same pattern.

An "adjusted" pocket watch, especially the late 1800's and early 1900's RailRoad pocketwatches keep better/more accurate time than all mechanical wristwatches from Rolex, Patek, etc.

:-) neil

If you believe the Hamilton website, the pocketwatches that the railroads used to run on time were Hamiltons.
