240D Oil Separator

Some have mentioned a separate oil separator on older 240D's. One that mounts outside of the aircleaner, like on a fender or firewall?

Anyone have a MB P/N for one? Pics? Any info? Am I losing my mind? (OK, don't answer the last one!)

I have an 82 240D and it has a separator outside the air filter (mounted on the front of the intake manifold, in front of the air cleaner). It's hooked to a vent off the top of the valve cover and has an oil return line at the bottom that runs down to the engine oil sump. The separated air goes into the air filter housing. I don't have a picture or a part number, but I can look to see if there is a number on it. I have looked for replacements in the past, as I wonder if this thing still functions. It has been a leak source at every connection. I have never seen a replacement that is sold. I took it off once, but could not get it apart to look inside...probably just works like a cyclone separator???

Oil separator

On the TDI website, one of the members is selling an improved CCV unit. It uses media cut from the material floor scrubber pads are made of. It seems to be a better filter than the SOS pads used in the homemade version.

I suggest using the 240D device over any home-made sparators, ask Alex! (you might want to do a search for the word on here)

Well..., just got back from the junkyard looking for one of these beasts, no such luck. So I decided to run by the new MB dealer in town. Turns out they can get me a new one on Tuesday..., IF I fork over $127.50!!!! YIKES!!!!

For $127 ($135 with tax!), I can come up with a helluva solid machined/polished alum weldment that would look a LOT slicker than that black plastic thing and work better in the process, sheesh! Was going to do it the right way, but......

I paid $89 for a new one, many dealers do not discount anything on parts.
Did you call Phil at the Partsforum? I wonder if he can special order one at a discount?
FYI there was a fellow at a wrecking yard in sacramento, CA (Silver Star Recycling or something similar) that sent me a quote for $10 PLUS $50 PULL FEE) which I declined, as a used unit that is simply out of line.
Another person in San Jose, CA wanted $15 for a pull. I should have grabbed it.
Put out a want for used parts, you might find one cheap.
Making one will be fun. If you do decide to go that route please share with us your results.
