Pinholes in muffler... JB Weld?

1982 300D

Have a few small pinholes in the muffler. Can I fix these with JB Weld or something else, or must I replace it?

Replace it if you can, if not, go to a parts store and get muffler bandage. Wraps around like putting a cast on a broken arm. Works ok and lasts a few months.

I'd use whatever epoxy I had sitting around as a temporary fix.

Mr Goodfahrt.

JB Weld or other epoxys will not work, the muffler gets too hot for
them, and they will either melt or burn.

You can get a hi temp muffler cement at any auto parts store, but I have never had good luck with them. They might get you thru inspection but in a month or 2 they will fall off.

Only real fix is a new muffler or to weld steel sheetmetal all the way around the muffler if the ends are still good. I've done this on my 300SEL6.3 mufflers because they are so expensive.

Gotta agree with PEH here. Best bet is new. I have an old 58 220s that kept eating exhaust systems from sitting during the winter. Broke down and had an SS system installed. It'll be there and quiet long after I'm dead. My state won't pass a bandaged muffler, I only do it as a stall tactic.

If you plan on keeping the car for a while, you can get a quality system at Timevalve .

They advertise using Type 304 stainless steel, which is a big plus, and remarkably better than the original - probably Type 409.

Pinholes are where the corrosion inside has come all the way through -- the rest of the metal is next. Get a new muffler and pipes, save yourself the hassle of doing the job twice (or three times) by getting the entire system and replacing it all at once, if you can afford it.

JB Cold Weld can only be stable until about 400 F. The average temperature for exhaust system is more than 1000 F.
