Any experience with euro headlamps?
Seller tells me that the brand is "TYC". What should I be paying for a pair? I have a 81 300TD and I'm just anal enough that I'd like to know whether the Euro headlamps were actually available for this car in Europe for model year 1981: I don't want to get too far from stock. You out there who have euro headlamps: any special re-wiring involved? Is light whiter and brighter without having oncoming traffic bleep you with their high beams all the time? Thanks much. |

TYC is a Taiwanese based company which makes lights for a lot of cars. They claim to be OEM but I can't recall EVER seeing a car that had them as OEM equipment. I think they're aftermarket for sure.
Don't pay too much, save the money for Bosch or Hella. |

I've read negataive comments about the TYC headlights from others on this forum.
Everyone has been very very positive about the DEPO headlights. I've seen them, and it's impossible to tell them apart from my Bosch OEM headlights, and they're much cheaper. Ask Ashman or Mike Tangas where they got them, or try doing a search on DEPO. They've been mentioned a lot.

Save your money for the Bosch of Hella. If you want the best bang for the buck, pick up some "7 H4 Hella headlights. You can pick up a pair for around $100. I have some of these on my old Ford pickup, and they work great, I am planning to get them for the 300CD when I get the money.

Make sure you get a E code set-not England.....
Yes, the factory did make them for a 1981. There was flat style and one similiar to the way your car looks now. Many ppl have Bosch, but I got the flat style fernel glass ones by Hella. They are costly, but you can really see much better. Oh, there's a ground on the passenger side fender close to the headlight. Make sure it's clean and tight. Viseably noticable as a dimmer passengerside headlight. See ppl driving like this all the time. Michael

All the aftermarket brands (TYC, DEPO, etc) are ok quality but not quite up to Bosch/Hella fit & finish. The external appearance and light output is fine, though. If you want the Euro "look" along with good light output, these are great. The eBay price is very low now, these are usually $200-$300 items.
If you just want to see better at night, get the Hella or Cibie replacement 7-inch round E-code H4 lights. They much cheaper (~$75/pair new with shipping) and the light output is fantastic, same as the full Euro light assembly. I have the Hellas on my W123 and they rock. Best price is at Susquhanna Motorsports: http://www.susquehanna.com/susq/hella/hdlmpprc.htm#7 On my 124's I have Hella 500E Euro lights. For the best prices on real Hella lights, contact PUMA (800-35-HELLA). Regards, |
