I have a squeaky steering wheel in my '77 240D. Only happens when I am stationary and turn the wheel. I can hear it behind the passenger side dashboard.
I know its a bad bushing, but which one in particular? Any brands/items to stay away from when replacing it?

Probably the idler arm bushing. Brand? Price MBZ, if excessive $$$ i'd look for Lemforder first then Febi.

+1 on idler arm bushing.
I've also had upper ball joints be squeaky, while stationary, when they were old. A shot of WD40 would clear it up for a few months - nothing is better than replacing with a nice Lemforder part of course.

When the control arm bushings rot out it causes tire wear on one of the edges of the tire depending on which of the bushing is going bad.

If the boots are intact some have got under the boot with WD-40 sprayed inside as a method of trouble shooting. Do one at a time so you know which one will need to be regreased under the boot.

I have not read threads on replacing the boots for a long time, but the boots used to be able to be bought separately if the boots are damaged.

There are various threads on what methods or tools to use to pop off tie rods to do boot changes and replacements. Depending on what your local parts stores have in their free rentals what they have may work.
