It's a great inline iron block six engine. Powerful, dependable, efficient.

would be the best of both worlds

don't know how practical it would be

Read some have gone the om606TD in the w126 - and/or Upgrade the IP on the om606td/or om603 and make some silly HP

seems like a much easier/cheaper way to do things

I posed this question around 2 years ago...

Look out for limp modes... weird shifting... Good record of Trans maint.

car has serious torque and efficiency. Love the power... had to fix a few limp issues. EGR delete and fuel pressure regulator.

Always- take off the plastic motor cover to inspect injectors- to see no leaks/Black Death!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well priced ones sell in less than few days!!!

That sounds like a VERY good endorsement from quite an experienced MB owner! 30, of any car, sounds amazing to me. No doubt you know your MB's.
I was wondering what a "ballpark" figure for an average value, in your opinion, might be? From what you said in your post, they sure don't seem to be very troublesome.
After reading a couple reviews, they sound like great cars. Easy to just plug in "E320 CDI for sale" but that leads all over the place....dealers, private parties, etc. I must admit, this thread has "piqued" my interest.
After a little online searching the prices vary a lot, as usual. Mileage is a big factor, of course. Many have well over 100k (200-300) miles and seem to be in the 5-8K$ range. Nice examples with <100k miles, >10k$. Does that seem about right?
Naturally, it can vary wildly with a few other factors considered. Great time to be selling, no doubt.

Pricing also depends on what area of the country you are located.

You have to decide on your budget for commensurate mileage and condition. If you find a cheap high mileage example, you can bet on it needing a lot of parts and labor costs to get it up to snuff in tip top working condition. Think $5K to $10K, after the purchase price. It's nothing to drop $3K to $5K on em annually. The purchase price, is just the beginning of $$. Many that claim they cost little or nothing to drive em, are usually those that either purposely neglect them, or, have no idea of the true maintenance $ that the car needs. These aren't cheap cars to drive.

Location is always a purchase price/value factor, for sure. I would steer clear of high mileage examples, though. Surprised to learn that annual costs could be so high. Thanks for the "sober analysis". Really an "eye opener". 3k to 5k annually, on basic maintenance, sounds like a "money pit", to me. Then again, I ain't loaded, with money to burn. Even if I were, don't think I'd drive something that would pull that much money out of my pocket, every month, just for maintenance. It goes against my frugal nature....

Are you installing gold plated parts? My experience is that it is reasonably cheap to maintain a CDI if you do your own wrenching. My CDI has 282k and I spent, may be $100 on oil change, or less on the car on maintenance last year. Granted, I spent $$$ on battery, new tires, glow plug controller, GP, engine mounts, conductor plate etc when I first got the car. But those are known issues from seller so the purchase price was adjusted accordingly. After that I spent peanuts. It has been super reliable.

My initial impression of "$3K to $5K" annually for maintenance was, "that's crazy!". Interesting to hear another side/angle of the same topic. Of course, when purchased, money always needs to be spent on a used car in order to "bring it up to snuff". As you stated, once that's done, expenditures should taper off quite a bit. It'll be interesting to hear other opinions/experiences....
