Not meaning to knock the 170DS, But that motor reported put out 43 hp and 74 foot pounds of torque, from a displacement of under 1.8 L. I saw a video of the 170DS and it looks pretty neat. The grill and headlights especially. But I suspect it was no speed racer.

I own a 170S in which the ;lawn mower engine used on the gas models were pretty much all worn out as the main civilian car in Germany from 1938-49.

I found several OM636 engines and discovered that they are the same as the early reefer engines used on Thermo-King units from 1973-2002.

The main difference between the two 170-180 set-ups is that the clutch on the diesel version is much thicker.

These engines reliably power the cars to 60mph and are remarkably economical.

Parts are still everywhere.

I have all the manuals for these and daw_two had the earliest diesel version made with 2x two-cylinder heads.

The biggest issue I have been told is the rear axle gears are typically neglected by owners and the from springs are terrible. Also-- no power brake booster.

I looked at installing a 123 brake system but it's too much work.

Hi Strelnik! Haven't seen you around for a while. Glad you are well. I suspected when this discussion of 170s came up you have one.

Ok, finally figured out the timing marks.

Took a great deal of looking, and double checking myself.

On my om636 (engine stamp of 52') installed in a 170d. There are no marks on the front cover or pulley. There is a tiny hole on the bellhousing(passenger side). Through this small window.

You will see the marks F:B O:T (the dots are a straight line). What ever holes, or other dips are of no concern with our IP timing.

This sounds simple enough right? Well not really, these stamped letters are super fine. Almost invisible.... Can't feel them, tried wiping them off-ended up covering them and losing my spot.

You better believe I stamped some marks on that timing cover!

I got those new Monark pencil tip plugs in. IT RUNS!

Sounds nice, but smokes like a freight train. Now I know the injectors don't leak, but the spray pattern was kinda meh too.

Is there any better type nozzles for the om636? Or do I just get the spec'd 636's made by monark?

Try running some Diesel Purge and see if that clears up the smoking.

I'll give
the purge a try. I know it has helped many of my cars in the past. Though this smoke isn't the same. More unburnt fuel than anything else. Considering the injection stuff was just tossed loosely on the floor for years.

I shouldn't complain.. Here is how getting it going all went.

After thinking about how much blow by this engine has(i let it run for quite some time). I'm leaning towards getting another engine.

Might have found a source 3 hours away, he might have those missing side panels I need to.
