Om616 is still being produced
The OM616 was a 2.4-liter four-cylinder oil-burner, built by Mercedes-Benz during the 1970s and 1980s and still manufactured by Force Motors in India.
Who would have thought!

There's been several threads on this subject. One guy on the forum was trying import one a couple of years ago.

It's not just the om616 that they keep making. I believe they still make the Mercedes TN (came out 1977, sprinter predecessor) and they call it a Force Traveller
The interesting thing about the TN was that in a 307D it had a gross weight of up to 3,500kg (7,700 lb) and yet it was available with a N/A OM616 from a 240D. I Doubt that thing ever reached 60mph but that's just a european thing |

The current iteration of the 616 Is turbo charged and probably has modern fuel injection and it makes a ton of power.

The 616 produced in the far east was improved. I never found out how though.

There was a fellow here who went as Gurka (not sure of spelling). If you search that he gave some info on the turbo motor.

OM616 is almost perfect as far as reliability goes and I think that if they changed it then they've made it worse |

Kind of reminds me of how they kept making the rear engined old beetle in other countries until the early 2000s even though they weren't sold in the U.S. since the late 70s. If the poor quality of the indian made injectors say anything I'd say those new engines made there are probably low quality as well.

I believe they are well regarded.

They still make OM617s too in larger capacity and common rail like the 616
616 And then they lopped a cylinder off a 616

nice photos.
their om617 turbo makes less hp but more torque than it's 80's original. also it's now a 3.3L ? I wonder where they've put the vacuum pump? looks like there's a block-off plate in place of the original vac pump also the 4 cylinder has a harmonic balancer whereas the original didn't the 3 cylinder must be the shakiest engine known to man |

yes, great photos! I imagine the vac pump is not required for anything where those engines are headed. They use the very familiar valve cover we all know and love.

Force motors India on the web was interesting. It appears the 616 may also be used as a tractor engine. Smallish control computer perhaps.
Anyways they build engines for Mercedes and BMW. We have their engine designation numbers now. so we might be able to look up service and fuel millage information. |

Roy Hunter, who used to moderate this forum as whunter, worked on a turbo 616 that was owned by an Israeli lady living in Ann Arbor MI. He said the engine's performance was quite lively.
