Out of curiosity, what kind of harm does a performance pump do to fuel economy? I'm talking for the non-turbo NA 616 or 617 motors.
I ask because most owners buy a diesel for economy, not performance. And while more performance is definitely desired, it will always take a back seat to better mpg.

A performance pump will do nothing for an NA engine other than potentially cause extra smoke. The only way to get more power out of a diesel is to increase the intake air charge so you can inject and burn more fuel. If the tune is a good one and you keep your foot off the skinny pedal, a performance engine can potentially net better economy due to higher efficiency and better power/weight ratio. Romping on the skinny pedal will negate all of that quickly though.

A lot of times the best way out would be if it is available simply use your time to work overtime and bank that for the purchase of the real thing or take on a temp part time job (after our current crisis is over). Or start selling off some of your belongings that are of no use to you anymore.
