Will never buy a Hengst filter again

About 15 years ago I bought 6 or 8 Hengst
filters from Rusty Cullins at "buy mb parts. kom," some you older guys will remember Rusty. (had to edit that, they blocked it out)
This is way before I discovered this forum.

We were going on a trip to Salt Lake City, Ut. from Santa Cruz, Ca.
So I changed the oil and used one of the Hengst filters.

I get back home and decide to change the oil and filter. Pull out the filter, and the sides are sucked in... it has like 6 flats on the sides. WTF?

I replaced it with another Hengst, add oil of course. Drove it for a few 100 miles and decide to pull the filter to check the condition.
Same thing, sides sucked in.

Now if you look at a Mann filter it has little holes punched in the upper part.
The Hengst are sort of like little dimples in the metal, but were not punched in enough to create the holes.
So all the oil was being pulled through the lower part of the filter.

I checked the rest of my stash of Hengst filters, and they were all the same.
I finally used a small tool like an Ice Pick, and pushed in the metal to create the holes. Didn`t take much, it was a defect in the manufacturing of the filters. May have just been that batch of filters. IDK.

Never used Hengst since that time. Now I have a stash of mann`s.

I did use Wix for a while, they were make like the Mann filters with the 2 sections.
Later they changed their design to one that is all one piece. Seems like as I remember the filter was shorter,
On the ends is a rubber grommet that is thick to maybe make up the difference? IDK. haven`t used them in years.

Which filter is the best? Every time I pull one out, they are all black and yucky, and yet these engines will still run 1,000,000 miles.
Think I read that on CL or E-bay, or? so gotta be the truth.

Baldwin are now marketed by Grainger, so if you can't find them locally, you now have another source. I recently had housing failures (burst at seam) on two different p/n Baldwins in different engines (Cummins) used in back up gensets. Sent the bits in to Baldwin, now awaiting response. Never seen this type of failure w/Baldwin before. Very disconcerting. I've always had good service in diesels from Hastings, Baldwin, Mann, Wix, Mahle, NAPA, Purolator, Lubrafiner, Bosch.

A while back I grabbed a few oil filters from the dealer. Financially, they were not too far off from the Mann filters I usually get.

Opened it up and I see it's also Mann, with the MB p/n and logo. But it was missing one or both the rubber/metal O-ring/washer, if I remember correctly.

So I went back to just getting purely Mann filters (bought here or other online stores). Never had any problems with these.

In the FSM there is an ' Attention ' warning...

saying that one should only install filters which have 55mm of exposed filter element at the bottom of the filter..
it appears there are some filters with 40mm exposed.. do not use those for the turbo 917 engine.
When breaking in a newly rebuilt engine one should use the filters which have NO metal cover over the paper filter.... and it should be used for the first 800-1000 miles.

Whilst I read that too I have never been able to find one of these special running in filters - the dealership hadn't heard of them either - chief mechanic raised his eyebrows when I mentioned "running in oil" too...

...it was all a bit "it isn't 1960 anymore son"...

...still running in oil is still available to buy even if you / I (delete as appropriate) can't find the gucci filters...

I was also having some issues with the Hengst filters too,
I ordered three on separate occasions and they were filled with what smelled like Earl Grey tea.

Wix filters are made in my town... however, I would NEVER use them in a 61x motor unless I had a separate soot bypass installed... the wix has zero soot bypass... so, yeah... no. Not in an old diesel motor!!!

Is there anything to indicate what country the filters were made in?

I believe the last Hengst Oil filter I bought for my 84 300D were made in Austria.

Please write the Hengst Company and attach the same pics to your email and see what they have to say.

It is hard to tell if that is contamination that got into the box from the outside or something from the upper 1/2 of the Filter that came out.
