I'm ok with the technology even in the 2008 ML. I just don't need my car phoning home or jumping in on the driving workflow. And I really don't need the Color Kinetics dashboard treatment that makes the car look like Vegas.

I have the Armageddon car (the 87) so I'm good there. I had a 75 B210 back in the day, it only had the radio for electronics...

Same reason why I rejected a "number" bed when I needed a new one recently. When the documentation the sales guy handed me told me that I would need to give the bed access to my wifi network that was the deal breaker.

The OM651 is the 2L I-4 that powered many Mercedes for several years including the Sprinter, many sold, I read somewhere 600,000 last year alone. Early ones had some timing-gear problems, I have read that this was cured, maybe 2014? It is direct-injected, piezo-injectors, ceramic glowplugs, sequential (dual) turbos, iron block.

The OM651.960 is the highest tune version, which is in the ML250 and the E300 I believe through 2016. Earlier MLs and Es had the V-6 as you already know.

Its replacement is the OM654, significant changes are the aluminum block and the single variable turbo. I'm not going to judge the engine, probably a good one, but I prefer the torque curve and low-end power of the OM651.960, feel that it's going the distance for me (at 1,000miles/week it has to). Its power curve/torque curve keeps me in the sweet spot climbing on the highway and never seems to need to downshift, reviews from Europe on the GLE with OM654 (they get a 9-speed) has the 954 weaker at climbing and hauling, needs to downshift much more. It appears from the graph that the torque is electronically limited, whether this was driven by block strength or by emissions or ?? I do not know. If Mercedes finds a way to overcome whatever this limitation is and turns up the torque, ... later models could have much more grunt. Oh, and it is reported that this engine will remain mated to the 7-speed in the diesels for US, I do not know that for fact (and 9 speeds like the GLC has sounds tasty!).

So, go with the fully sorted powertrain exiting? I didn't have a choice since the US introduction of diesel models is delayed, but the more I drive and read the more I like the 651. It has its goofiness, I wish I could defeat the ECO mode as default (have to push the button every time I turn on the car or it'll shut off at stoplights), I wonder about an electric water pump that reverses to heat the engine faster, electronics controlling the multiple-event piezo injectors and sequential turbos, will EGR gunk my engine?

But since it is common for me to start the car once, drive 200miles and shut off, do it again, ... my starts/mile, shifts/mile, and heat-cycles/mile are pretty low and there should be plenty of data points out there for me by the time mine's in for serious maintenance.

Credit for the graph goes to another poster, IIRC at 13enzWorld

I'd have another OM651.960 in a heartbeat over the 654.
How much are they?

Didn't ask Tom, wife doesn't like black headliners so she didn't even want to sit in one, but she loves the '17 with light/beige headliner (gas though).

Hmmm... I never considered putting in a diesel in my 76 280... I bet the pristine om603 I have would bolt in fairly simply...

Slap on a clk 6speed... Hmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Just frustrated needing another vehicle and not being able to find one because diesel vehicle sales are essentially on hold.
I can merge this thread with the NJ blowing coal thread if you like...

I think the threads are different though...

Her 2008 ML320 CDI is doing well with 138k miles. I was very tempted to trade it in on a newer CPO 2014 or 2015 ML or GL Bluetec especially since they are running a 1% for 48 mo finance promotion. But that equates to a payment north of $550. With 2 kids in college that's a no go.

So I just ordered up a boat load of parts to fix the oil cooler and swirl flap debacle on the ML. Going for the 250 km award and beyond. Stay tuned for the updates on this. The thread from a few months back will be invaluable.
What do they run? I have seen a few around, and I like it a lot...

Exactly why I avoid Microsoft as much as possible. Everything can be fine and the system breaks because of the forced updates. It's like a friggin virus. Good thing they don't make cars.

Ugh! Don't start with me and Windows... Why the hell did they remove any dos program support from 64 bit versions?
And forget about win doze 10!

Been using MAC since 1983 or so - I can't relate!

Dan
We have a MAC shop here in town who does - Bilzi MAC in Wilmington, NC. Pretty sure Steve has some SEs and SE30s. I check in with him if I need new software or hardware but he sure doesn't make any $$ from me from repairs - never need any. Love me some MACs!

Dan

I can't deal with any commercialized operating systems, to be honest. They're all just as bad.

I have a powerbook 180, LC3, and some others I forget. Classic macs are cool.

I've recently thought it would be cool for biodiesel powered cars to get the alternative fuel tags and hov lane benefits vs the soccer moms in an Flex fuel Denali/expedition/whatever that never fill up with E85. Whether you burn hpr or veggie based it is still not fossil fuels...
