OM642 oil leak at front of engine
Have oil pooling on the top of oil pan ( in the little valley near middle and in the oil dipstick mounting well). It is definitely being slung by the crank pulley. Don't see anything dripping down from top of engine. It had oil cooler seals in 2012. New to this engine and may be overthinking this but seems like front crank seal, right? If so, anyone done this ? What is torque spec on crank bolt?
Replaced these on my old 601s and 616s but they had many more miles than the 136k on this R320. Thanks!

The first thing to do is clean the whole engine compartment...
then take the car on short.. then longer test drives and examine it closely....

How often do you replace the air filters and when was it done last ?

Figured it out.....
It ended up being the o-rings where the "charge air cross pipe" (black plastic intake tube between intercooler and intake manifold, #140 on the diagram) mounted to the front of the engine. Oil was running down the pipe and dripping onto the belt and crank pulley thus getting slung everywhere. Actually, the culprit o-ring is not in this diagram. It installs to the left of 145 and sorry but couldn't find the intake manifold diagram. Kinda of a bummer as the attached diagram was what I was looking at with the parts counter guy and ordered all the seals on this assembly. Of course, when I get it all tore apart on a Sunday I realize there are two up there. Doh! One of the few times I'm glad to be a pack rat.....found a match in the parts boxes.
Pretty easy fix, and luckily the soot build up in the egr tube didn't look too extensive either.

Ah, found the parts diagram. Number 15 was the dribbler in my case.

Just as I was suspecting over in the oil cooler thread...
Anyway, you unhook the intercooler tube (pull clip 205, ease hose out of fitting) Unplug all the connectors on the mixing chamber and the glow plug relay. The glow plug relay and bracket can remain attached to the chamber. Remove item 230 (resonator chamber). Remove 5 bolts (I think) (be careful not to mix them up, they are all different lengths) Gently dislodge chamber, 200, 190, 140 all come out as one piece (look at the picture in the oil cooler thread I posted, showing the chamber lying on the table). Renew o-rings and gaskets Reassemble I would still check your PCV puck for a ruptured diaphragm.

OM642 leak spots
I have a GL350 (2011) and have had the additional spots leak on the front. Oil filter housing to block gasket and the vacuume pump base gasket.
Did the oil cooler seals back at 72k! I have 105k now...running smooooooth.

When I did my oil cooler job the kit I bought from FCP Euro had all the seals in the intake tract. Changing all these plus the dreaded oil cooler seals has made mine totally leak free for the last 3 months. Running much smoother with the swirl flap working again. Improved my mileage from low to mid 20s too. I'm in the mid 140k's, heading for the 250 k km award!
I highly recommend if you have an OM642, bite the bullet and just do this repair, you won't be disappointed.

I would try the two o-rings on the intake runner first before pulling the PVC stuff. Basically you need to remove the tubing for the intercooler and the associated flaps. It all is pretty straightforward and unbolts as a unit. Took about an hour or so. |

yes, I have ordered all gaskets so they should show up at dealer around Wed or Thur. So I hope to jump on it Friday or Sat. Then clean everything and see what will happen. Thanks

Finally I had time today and replaced all gaskets 210, 150, 235 as picture below and drove 50 miles and nothing all dry. Also some bolt 220 were missing, someone decided to ignore them, Bad mechanics!
Next step tomorrow I will do CCV valve. |
