I was swapping the fan & clutch on my 85 300D (w/ 83 engine) with a spare and thought to see if a Mopar one might fit (for my 65 Dart). It bolts directly to the water pump, using the spacer sleeve that came in the clutch box, however the Mopar fan I have is too thick, so runs into both the crank pulley (power steering) and the water pump inlet. The fan also barely fits the shroud. Autozone's site says this clutch (TorqFlo 922747) fits many GM cars too. This suggests our 300D's have a water pump pattern common on older U.S. cars. I have seen after-market water pump pulleys w/ 3 holes (Ford?), so must not be a true standard.
Why care? Parts for our cars are fairly rare, a bit strange since millions were sold all over the world. In a pinch, domestic car parts are easier to find and much cheaper. Autozone wants $122 for a 300D fan clutch. I might be in a pinch because after cleaning my 2nd M-B fan clutch, I found a chunk missing around the shaft so the outer seal is exposed. Can't tell if that seal contains the viscous fluid or is just a dust shield. Problem is I couldn't bolt on the Mopar fan clutch unless I found a thinner fan, and those aren't easy to find either. Who knows what other fan clutches would fit.
