Ever wonder what a straight piped OM617 sounds like from the cab? Take a listen.

Sounds ok. That's what I plan for my 39 Stude with 617, at least to start with.

I have a Flowmaster 40 series laying around. Just hanging it off the tailpipe sounds pretty good, very deep and mellow at idle and no harshness when revved. I'll get it mounted eventually and will post another video when I do. Very curious to see how it sounds under load and going down the road.

Moved over the weekend, Frankenyota has a new home with a shop to sleep in. Will be able to work and store stuff in the shop and actually park my vehicles in the garage. Novel concept, for me.
Several trips with a fully laden truck while towing a fully laden trailer. My Frankenyota hauled the most weight out of all the vehicles in the convoy, was able to keep up on hills, and burned the least fuel doing so. No issues whatsoever. Pretty happy with how it went and VERY happy with how the truck performed.

Always a fun experience going to a new fuel station or working with a new fuel attendant(because we're too dumb to pump our own fuel here in Oregon - except for diesel), and messing with the overly insistent attendant who swears there's no such thing as a Toyota diesel.
"Sir, that's a diesel pump, you can't put diesel in your truck. Please pull forward to the gasoline pump. Sir, please put that back, you're not allowed to pump your own gas here. Please pull forward to the gasoline pump. Sir, sir, you're going to damage your engine. Sir! Sir! Oh. That's a diesel."

THAT brought a chuckle! Here in NC either we're smarter or they don't care if we blow our butts up due to unsafe fueling.

Truck doing it's thing. Hauling a load from buddy's storage, and marking it's spot in the shop. For those wondering if the 617 has enough power for towing reasonably, yes it does just fine. Putting a load behind it actually slows it down very little.

While waiting for a headlight switch to come in for the Mr2, I've been commuting in the truck about 40 miles/day at 65-70mph from the new house to work, and really liking how the 617 performs in that role. It'll pull my truck around town, and go wheeling on the trails, but getting out on the road and eating up the miles really seems to be what these engines were designed for and where they shine. It's a different kind of power than a gas engine, that's for sure. Doesn't accelerate particularly quickly, but will hold speeds on hills that larger gas engines won't, even hauling a load. On flat ground, a 4 cylinder Toyota pickup will keep up with me no problem. Get into the hills and I'm out running even V6 Toyota pickups(same era/generation, a new Tacoma with a V6 putting out 300+hp is a whole different story). Entirely different torque and power band, while still getting great MPG's. Err, great for a very capable offroad truck running aggressive 31/10.50's.
I'm very pleased with the swap. Looking forward to getting the shop organized and getting that new motor finished and swapped in.

Me too! Have been following Dan's thread about Mutt w/ the built pump with a lot of interest. A streetable amount of power increase would be most welcome.
Couple pics of shenanigans today, just in case there was any doubt about my redneck credentials. Edit: I also hit 20k miles on the swap a few days ago. Another 10k miles and I'll be at roughly the break even point as far as cost.
