2 Micron fuel filter CAT

.

hi guys

upon reading some older diesel 911 posts I have decided to copycat
him a bit

so here it is,..2 Micron fuel filter tested on pure diesel and B100
no difference,no lack of power..just a quite cleaner fuel in my IP )

two steps needed:
adapter plate 4 holes to move a bit filter housing
adapter thread M14x1,5 to T1-14" as the CAT has bigger + imperial thread.

once again,
thanks nine eleven

beers,
ChO

You are the only person besides Myself who has done that Mod. In Sep 2009 I finally installed the real CAT Filter to replce the WIX on I used to get the projecto going. I hanve not changed the CAT Filter since that time (I keep an extra in the trunk).

Also if you were stuck on the Road somewhere due to a plugged Filter you can remove the threaded Adapter and install a normal Mercedes type Filter if no CAT Filter was available.

On the VW TDIs the CAT Filter it is a popular Filter Mod with a $28 Dollar Filter Head that uses the stoc Banjo Fittings.

Here is the thread:
Lower Micron Fuel Filter Mod
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/225004-lower-micron-fuel-filter-mod.html

In the thread there is 2 types of Filter Mods. On the Baldwin Filter Mod if for some reason you could not get a hold of the Baldwin Filter the Old VW Rabbit or Old Volvo Diesel Fuel Filters form the 1980s will fit; alghough the VW Filter has the same 10 Nominal Micron filtration as the stock Mercedes Filter has it is larger and has a drain.

3 yrs on the same filter it is awesome
factory declared is 15k miles heavy duty or 20k miles standard usage.

I went one step further with threaded adapter,I made it with small cone
on top of it so it is in the filter fully and locked, that way when you taking filter off, adapter comes down also ... so I have spare 10 mic. Hengst in the trunk.

later I can easily with help of M14 screw take the adapter out of filter body
and plunge it to another CAT.

as I'm experimenting with industrial B100 I was worried about thickness
of bio itself but that thing does not bother me now (maybe in winter LOL)

all in one, great mod me thinks

cheers

I am one of those people who normally does not change a Filter till I have a symptom that it is plugged up.

Also 98% of the time I buy My Fuel from the same place. I was told by Truck Drivers that that place had good quality Fuel back in 1975 and it is also a place that a lot of the local businesses have Commercial accounts for Fuel.

And, it is not even 1 mile away from me.

I have never had anything grow inside of the Diesel Volvo (it has only one Filter) that I have owned since 1992 or the Mercedes Fuel Tanks and never used any Biocide as a preventative.

Cool idea! I like it that it fits on the stock filter housing. Keeps it simple. For me the benefit is that it's a much bigger filter. I always felt the MB stocker was pretty tiny. I have heard of the study by CAT on particle size. History seems to show that the stock 10 micron filter is ok for the IP since most IP's outlast the car (300-400k miles). But more filtration can't hurt! Awesome that the filter is that big! If I had a Veg Oil Mercedes, that'd be the way to go. That'd take a while to plug.

Just to get up to speed a bit, is there any fuel/water separator filter on the market that I can just take out of the box and use in place of the spin on type stock fuel filter on my OM 617 in the 83 300D?

I would love to have better filtration, but I do not want to have to modify the filter mount for a 16MM bolt, or such.

Thanks,

Glenn

Psaboic, there are a number of co`s that make after mkt filters with a water trap. Stanadine (sp) makes one do a search it has been posted before.

I have a Racor on my 80 240D and have seen these on a few others as well. the picture below is of another 80 240D (pic from CL) and like the one I have. I also use this on my Datsun PU (sig) and used it for over 30 yrs. this is an older model NLA but the filters are. I get them from West Marine.

Do a Google search on Racor to see what they offer now.
Or search for Diesel filter/water seperator.

With the CAT Filter Mod you do not change the Filter Housing. You have to make a Threaded Adapter that the Stock Filter Bot Threads into. You do need to make a plate to space the Stock Filter Housing 1 inch or so away from the cross Member the Filter Housing Mounts to.

It was the Baldwind BD**** Filter that you needed to modify the Housing for a larger Central Bolt.

One thing no one speaks of is that some Water Separator type Filters are made to be used on the Suction Side of the Fuel Supply System.
You need to do a little research to find out if it can go on the pressure side and how much pressure it can take.

I picked the CAT Filter after reading an article in a VW TDI Forum and reading what CAT had to say about the Filter. Also CATs quality is well known.
Using the Stock Housing kept the under the Hood space close to stock and allowed me to install a By-pass Oil filter in the area that could have been used for add on Water Separator.

RACORs quality is also well know but there systems cost quite a bit. Also a RACOR Water Separator with a Filter Element a similar size of the CAT Filter Element would take up a lot of room and be expensive.

The CAT Filter has no Drain or Bowl to visualize the crap that gets into the Fuel but I have been driving Diesel Cars sinc 1992 with and I have yet to get a bad load of Fuel.

I bought a small CAT Water Separator similar to the Standyne one mentioned in another Thread. I had planed to replace the Plastic Primary Filter. However, I found it only has a Screen inside as a Filter and the Water is separated by an expansion Chamber and a change in direction of the Fuel Flow.
Have never installed it.

how did you do this? this is AWESOME! Any interest in making these threaded fittings available to us here? I was just on the hunt for the micron ratings of the Bosch, Mann, Mahle and WIX as these are the ones offered by Fastlane and some of the other places I can find filters. What is the CAT part number for the filter you are using and do you have a suggestion for a filter to use for now?

thanks mate,I just stole a diesel911 previous idea
if I produce those it would cost arm and leg since I m located in Europe
it is much simpler and easier to do it by yourself
the cat filter is 1R-0750

I can post adapter plate and thread dimensions if needed

cheers
ChO

One option would be to replace the Stock Fuel Filter Mount with an aftermarkete one that fits the CAT Filter 1"-14 threads per inch (you should recheck the threads per inch).

There is one that VW TDI People use at about $28 each.
If you use an aftermaket Filter Mount you need to figure out how to route your Fuel Retun Lines.

thank you that would be great! I would love to do it without the plate so I can use the standard housing! I have a couple of contacts who have machine shops and lathes etc...met a guy this week who custom fabricates underwater camera housings!

I wonder if I can make it fit on the OM603. I just like the bit CAT logo.

You might PM DeliveryValve as to where He bought the Filter Mount/Base He used on His TDI Cat Filter Mod.

I located My pictures of the real CAT Filter Base/Mount;
CAT Fuel Filter Base/Mount part # 280-2698.
See the pic of the Box for all of the Numbers.
