Well ok I agree that if there is a grocery list of nickel-and-dime add-ons, they should be displaying a sign so everyone expects them at the counter. That is just good common business sense (not that there is an excess of rocket scientists in the yard biz, granted).

However, my sympathy is slightly lessened by the nirvana of what you guys have available in PnPs.

In my area the only import-stocked PnP is only open 8-5 Monday to Friday, and the owner is too cheap to even properly gravel the lot (forget paving), so it is like a scene from a First World War battlefield much of the fall and spring.

And it operates on the "hold your breath as you reach the counter" pricing methodology. So depending on mood, the weather, etc., etc. the results can be anywhere from "Hey great, thanks!" to "YOU WANT ME TO PAY WHAT?" on pricing.

We do have a new chain that recently opened, with posted make-independent pricing (yes!), but anytime a Benz appears it's devoured immediately like a steak in a pirhana pool.....

I just came back from PickNPull's 50% off sale. Here is what I purchased:

The rubber window glass brushes toward the bottom of the window glass,
4 door latches (was charged a core charge on these--what the heck?),
Starter,
Small piece of hose,
2 brackets

Total price with 50% off discount: $80.76! The heck? This was expensive even with 1/2 off!

Umm to a certain point--But every customer paying the same predatory charges OVER and OVER anytime they buy parts from the same vehicle--BS.

I agree. Reading this thread is like listening to a guy complain that his supermodel wife is "too physical".

Thats just terrible, but id be glad to have the opportunity to get just as screwed by PNP.

Really--You think running a buisness is pure profit???????????
And you think buisnesses dont have costs--- Thats silly.

Then by that thinking there are no such thing as customers--ONLY TARGETS.
Tell this nonsense to Bank of america-- they got delt with the way anyone trying predatory charges should be.

i go to PNP type yards once a week and around here (middle TN) they only have a environment charge, i forgot how much exactly but it isn't much. plus when i come up to the counter with a bunch of stuff they don't even charge for the little stuff and most times the clerk is so unknowledgeable about the parts that they don't charge for the right item (example: today i pulled an exhaust manifold off an OM603 and even told the clerk it is an exhaust manifold (their list is $20) but he gets out his tape measure and rings it up as just plain exhaust pipe and charges me $6) also at this other yard i found a bunch of new in the box parts (water pump, fuel filter, trans filter kit) and chick at the counter said they don't have a "button" for new items and just lets me have them for free...i love self service salvage yards!

The admission fee is silly - is this a county fair? Fine, whatever.

The admission tax is plain wrong. BTW I pay 18 cents.

The environmental fee is a weak excuse to make money to cover their environmental expenses. Another business would simply raise prices. Either way, we pay. Sucks, but I get it.

The core charge is the real problem. If I'm going to start a stink, I'm going for this one. They are not selling rebuilt parts, they are not going to rebuild the core returns, so charging for cores is just an exploitation of the customer. They either get all the scrap value back from you, or they get more money from you. It's a hidden, tricky way to make more profit at your expense.

What can be done? I know what they'd say - if you don't like the price, don't buy it.

Yes. I get jealous every time I hear talk about a Pick N Pay. I am in W PA and I believe the closest one to me is in Columbus, OH, about a three hour drive.

Roger that

Core charge on a(n)

Air Cleaner $2.50
Ball Joint $1.50
Bezel $1.50
carpet $1.50
console $7.00
Fan blade $1.50
Pickup topper $12
Taillight assy $4.50

There is no way they can be "rebuilding" this sort of stuff as they COULD be with starters. alternators , transmissions, etc.

Even those, I seriously doubt they do much of since they all get tossed in the same pile. How can they pay someone to sort it all out and figure out who it goes to for rebuilding?

WOW!!! That is nuts what that yard is charging a core charge on. $4.50 for a plastic Tail light assy?

I look at the core charge as the total price of the part. I pull a axle (1/2 shaft) it`s just for a spare to have on hand. I don`t have one to return. then when you return to old part, they don`t give you money, you get store credit. this is a way to get you back in to purchase more parts. that`s just the way it is.

I was going through my reciepts for the past 5 day 50% sale.

Transmission......$49.99
Core..................$29.99

Axle C. V. Type...$14.99
Core..................$04.99

Transmission......$49.99
Core..................$29.99

Flywheel............$12.99
Core.................$01.99

Clutch Cover......$08.74
Core.................$00.99

Clutch Disk........$08.74
Core.................$00.99

Bumper Euro.....$22.99
Core.................$04.99

Bumper Euro.....$22.99
Core.................$04.99

Drive Shaft........$21.99
Core.................$04.99

I also purchased the heater assy, there is the evaporator, heater core and blower motor, but no core charge for this unit, yet if the other parts were purchased seperately, there would be a core charge, also bought some aluminum wheels with tire, and no core charge.
what really seems strange, is a fender will have a $4.99 core chg, and a spindle steering knuckle assy will have a$1.99 core. that spindle is a heavy sucker.
a Differential will have the same $4.99 core as a fender, what the......? I won`t bring that to their attention or they will raise the same as a transmission.

Iam not complaining about the core charge, but there is such a variation on their pricing for the core charge.

Now when is the next sale?

Charlie

I've heard more than once how parts yards like crushing MBenz cars. They are heavy.

I figure their core charge is so they get the old heavy part back to scrap. They probably figure that they could get X amount of cash just for the weight so it figures into the price of the part.
