pick-n-pull 5% off--Yea SURE~~ Vent Your Angers
The title was supposed to read 50% off but 5 is much more accurate when they get done with adding on all the BS fees.
I didn't go for their carrot on a string this time, y'all know what im talking about, or it dosent bother you getting reamed. i need to get a complete front suspension out from under a late jag for a 38 chevy pickup im building. No way im going for their nonsense, Theres other yards right up the road that dont play the games. Last edited by panZZer; 05-26-2012 at 04:22 PM. |

Listing the specific fees would make this post more informative.

About the only fee that is under P&P's control is the entrance fee, which is the same whether there's a sale underway or not ($2 here in CA). The "environmental" fees and sales taxes are all tacked on by state and local governments and not something the yard has any control over. I've gotten some great bargains at the local P&P and am sorry the OP doesn't agree.

So…the customer has to pay the state an "environmental" fee for the priviledge of recycling used parts?

environmental disposal fee --CORE CHARGE FEE?--WTF they arent selling new parts, everything in the place is a core. |

I agree that the core fee is total BS. Otherwise, I've gotten some great deals from that place. A turbo charger for $40(50% off), good radiator for $55, the list goes on and on. After 10 years of MB diesel ownership, I'm sure that Pick and Pull has saved me close to $1,000.00 when comparing the price of their parts to new parts or the clowns on fleebay who want $75.00 for a W126 headrest.
Sometimes you get lucky and the cashier doesn't have a clue what your buying. I pulled an injection pump off of a 240D during a 50% sale one time and paid less than $30.00 for it.

Without a detailed listing of fees, this thread is a random rant.
The core charge is a pain, salvage yards do this so they don't loose the value of the metal for scrap. Starters and alternators are rebuild items so a core charge / return is acceptable. If you really want a core charge to complain about, Haas machine tool ( from CA ) charges a 100% core charge on _every_ part bought. Buy a $ 25 rubber toothed belt? There is a $ 25 core charge if you don't return the old one, and you have to pay shipping to CA even if you bought the parts from the local dealer. I'm OK with a core charge on parts that are sold as rebuilt and they need cores to rebuild. Haas claims the core charge is so they can inspect the parts and improve them. I say it is so they can reduce the number of used parts / cores in the wild. |

My receipt from earlier this week shows an "admission tax." If I browse or shoplift, I'm not subject to admission tax. Why the heck do they penalize me for making a purchase?

ive got no complaints about the pick n pull here. i bought a complete supercab with interior, doors, glass, dash, wiring , EVERYTHING for $195. had a $50 core charge that i didnt end up paying because i brought my rusted out cab with me when i picked it up. best part? i stripped the old cab to nothing but a red metal shell.

One more thing, I'm sure that all of the salt/rust belt members on this forum would be more than happy to pay a few bucks in environmental and admission fees to get their hands on some of the W123 and W126 chassis that we West coasters have been fortunate enough to pick apart.

PickNPull (Tacoma, WA) is hit and miss for me. Sometimes I get a few trinkets and it costs a fortune (one example is a set of seat belts that cost over $100). Sometimes the owner is nice to me and gives me a bunch of stuff at a low price or gives me things for free, but the newer employees nickel and dime me to death.
I'm not happy that the price of parts has shot up and that I now have to pay environmental fees. Their policies change all of the time and are often unfair. Here's an example: I bought a set of steel rims at $5 a piece. They wanted $15 a piece for each tire that was either bald or shredded, not holding air, obviously no good. I told them that they were junk tires and I just wanted the rims, but they told me they had to charge me for them and then I could bring them back and get a refund. So, I did as they said (spent $25 getting them dismounted), then went back. They then told me that they couldn't refund my money, only store credit. So, whatever. I had them give store credit. Some time later I got another set from there (again, with bad tires). I pointed this out to them and they told me they still had to charge me for the tires, but that I could bring them back for store credit. So, this I do after I pay to have them dismounted. Now their story changes. First of all they tell me they can't take them back because I waited too long (I was just in there an hour earlier). I told them that it had only been an hour, so they said, "Okay, pick out another set of tires." I told them I wanted store credit instead because I didn't need tires, and only got these bad ones because I was forced to. Then they tell me that they won't give me store credit, only credit toward more tires. So, I pick out 4 tires that I didn't have a use for. Ridiculous.

Environmental fee
Quote:
A tax on the admission fee is a strange one, I agree. California is desperate for tax revenue, that's for sure, they're taxing everything they can. Here's an example for the person who was asking (sorry for the lack of formatting): Item Price Vacuum pump $14.99 Core charge $2.99 Coolant overflow $3.49 Outside temperature display $3.99 Subtotal $25.46 Admission tax $0.16 Environmental fee $1.97 Sales tax $2.20 Total $29.79 Admission $2.00 Grand total $31.79 These prices are all from the 50% sale -- regular prices are twice these numbers. The vacuum pump was a nearly-new Pierburg, over $300 from FastLane, $418 from the dealer. That's a bargain no matter what the extra charges are. If I had an old vacuum pump I could get the core charge back but it would cost $2.99 in fuel just to drive there and back, not worth the bother. Jeremy

Why do they charge sales tax on the core charge, admission tax and environmental fee? It might be worth a letter to the Board of Equalization.
