White smoke at idle after driving
I have a new problem with my "cream puff" that I posted about earlier and decided on a new post.
I searched for this problem and can't find a clear match. I have the car running pretty strong and a new problem has come up. After I run the car down the highway or run it hard down the road then let it idle it will smoke, white smoke that smells like burned oil at idle. I can rev it up and in ten -20 seconds it clears and returns to normal and it will not smoke at all. I will rev it to 3-4 grand and hold it there still no smoke. Take it out to drive and return to the house and 20 seconds after slowing for my turn it will start up again. It almost seems to be braking related causing the oil to surge forward in the engine and loading up the egr line? Two things to note: 1. I have a 3/4 heater hose about 14" long wrapping around 1/2 way the air filter for the egr return line. 2: This seems to have gotten worse with an oil change to 10/40 synthetic. I drive it 50 miles a day up a hill that I run almost wide open for five miles and it does not burn oil on the dipstick. The smoke comes less with the oil halfway down the dipstick lines. If the level is to the top it will smoke worse. Could the egr return line be the cause? It is actually lower at one point than the outlet on the valve cover and the air filter inlet. |

What model is your "cream puff"? Year might help too.

Wow! brain fade. It's a 1981 300SD. I've been checking on things today and it's begining to look like bad turbo seals or a problem in #3 cylinder such as a cracked ring or piston, or a blown head gasket, maybe valve guides. Higher pressure blow by makes it smoke worse. I checked the egr tube and it was not the source of oil and it smoked with it disconnected. The exhaust connection at the turbo is wet with oil. There is visible oil at the bottom of the down pipe. I am going to pull the exhaust off the back of the turbo to see if it's got oil there.

Wow! an actual problem solved(hopefully).
This is what I found with the turbo removed. The exhaust manifold looked clean and dry The last picture showed the exhaust, first is downpipe.

Wastegate from the back of the turbo.
I installed a spare turbo I had here and it leaked worse than the original! I guess it's time for a new one. The other turbo I have is a california turbo and it won't work unless I switch things around. I will pull the second one to see where the oil came from on it. |

Where is the best place to get a new or rebuilt turbo from? I've looked on Ebay and around the net. Has anybody rebuilt their own with success? Was it worth the time involved?

Have you seen this thread about a lot of bad fuel going around lately?
Im having similar symptoms that came on all of a sudden. (lots of smoke and a clanky nailing sound at idle) I have been reading around the forum the last few days and there does seem to be a lot of threads with similar symptoms. I am currently working on eliminating the possibility that it is bad fuel before I move on to thinking I have a more serious engine problem. I re-did the valves and changed my primary fuel filter that is a big goldenrod bowl type. There was a lot of grey chunks around the bottom that looks like moisture in the fuel. Also got some fuel from a bigger higher volume station and added a strong dose of PowerService cetane additive. That made some improvement but the same symptoms are still there. Im heading out now to get some DieselPurge and a new spin on fuel filter. I will report back if I have any success with that.

Looks like the turbo's oil seals are shot and it's sucking oil into the exhaust and burning it off. How's your oil level, do you need to top off a lot?

The original turbo on the engine would smoke after driving. It would throw out a huge cloud for 3 minutes like a dragcar burnout. It did not burn much oil on the dipstick. I installed a spare unknown turbo I had and it actually started leaking oil out of the downpipe in a few minutes of running. So I am pretty sure I know what the problem is now I deciding if i rebuild mine($100 plus time) or get a new one for $375. The new one sure looks pretty! After all costs of the Mercedes including fuel I save about $15-$18 dollars a day driving this vehicle instead of my F-350 4x4 DRW. Plus it's much smoother to drive!

Think airshow smoke. Injected light oil into the exhaust for massive amounts of smoke. In my case the white smoke would show up every so often, then I figured out the Alda line had a hole in it and OMG 30% more horsepower! Well not long after that the BIG smoke started. I mean airshow smoke. It's cool in an airplane, but not at a stoplight. Although I've actually wanted to set up a smoker on a car for fun, it works much better when you can control it and turn it off.
MB -Owner-in-ind black is overfueling, white that smells like buring engine oil is just that. |
