Picture of Bad Engine Mount
Does anyone have a picture of a bad engine mount. I can see mine on my 80 300d, but not sure if I know what I am looking for. How do you tell if it is collasped or bad?

They can look ok but be bad. Most of them look obviously bad with rubber hanging off or smushed enough to get some metal vibration.

No seriously. Good motor mounts should feel somewhat like tire rubber. If you can push your finger into it like a wet sponge I'd consider them gone. But as the above posters have mentioned, knowing the relative distances between parts of the engine and the body will tell you. Certain things touching that shouldn't be touching...

It will also look very wide, compared to what a new part looks like . . . they collapse almost like a pancake.

Here's what mine looked like after I removed them.
![]() When I rocked the engine I heard a clunk. If you can look at someone else's car you can see how much play is in their mounts. Now that I know what it should look like, I can tell when the mounts are getting too far gone by grabbing the valve cover and rocking the engine.

Wow, the one in that thread must have made a hell of a racket for a long time to get that bad. When the mounts collapsed on my '83 it would growl and buzz and rattle when I put it in gear.

Inspect the top oil cooler line, next to the power steering pulley. If you see a groove where the pulley has been rubbing, then yes, you have worn engine mounts. In this case, worn engine mounts can have disastrous results.

To revive an old thread, here are some more pics, this is off a 115-
Good mount (passenger side)- ![]() Evil mount (driver side)- ![]() In the second pic, the mount arm was riding on the steel cup of the mount itself, and was visible from underneath as actually touching
