Your driving style could be the problem or maybe the motor needed tuning

I really loved my 81 wagon... perhaps partly because it had the nicest aftermarket paint job I had ever seen...it was the factory Teal color... I have painted cars myself in the past... so I know how much trouble it is getting the door jams and such looking perfect ...
From Austin to Ft. Worth and back on several tests... at over 75 mpH I got 27 mpg... when I first did the math I did not believe it myself... so I was extra careful to check everything.......
but the fact is that a diesel with a turbo is about the most efficient engine combo around.. and these people did build them right...
At the time it had AC and front suspension needs... and I could not afford to fix those... and AC is needed here in Central Texas...
