What and Where is the Bowden cable??
I keep seeing it mentioned, but I don't know where it is or what it does. Can someone enlighten me? How should it be adjusted when I DO find it?

The bowden cable controls the RPM at which the trans shifts. One end is connected to the passenger side of the trans the other is connected to the linkages on top of the valve cover. There should be a white adjusting nut. Turn it one way it will raise the shift RPM the other way will lower the shift RPM.

An 81 may not have a Bowden cable for the transmission. If you have the older servo cruise control unit, there's one there.

Some models (early W116 SD's for instance) don't have a cable, they have a rod.

Ohh, that's why I can't find it! It's not there. (No linkage on the passenger side of mine). Thanks, guys. I was feeling pretty ignorant.

No linkage at all going from the valve cover down to the right side of the transmission? I thought only 80 d's lacked that linkage.

Not that I know of. In all the times I've changed the valve cover gasket, and the valve adjustment yesterday, I've just had two linkage rods on the drivers side, the vacuum connector on the top, and the pcv hose over to the breather to disconnect. Nothing on the passenger side but the intake, and oil.
