Exhaust Flex Pipe

On my 1987 300TD I noticed a small air leak on the flex pipe and I need to replace it.
  • Is this something I have to get from the dealership?
  • Does it even have a part number?
I don't mind ordering it from here however I need it before next weekend as I am going on a road trip!

Attached is a photo of the file and here is a higher resolution version -- the red arrow shows the flex pipe and more specifically shows the black gunk build up from the leak. Any information you can give me is much appreciated -- my lack of knowledge in terminology will, I'm sure, be cleared up by the lovely experts of this wonderful forum.

Happy Valentine's Day PeachParts!

Just went through the same thing this week on my SD.

I would suggest you call Phil, he'll be able to help you. I had to get mine from the dealer (special order, took 48hrs to get it) ($57).

FastLane (click 'Buy Parts' link at the top of this page) might have this part and certainly could get it for you. Otherwise a dealer would have it but probably have to order it for you. If it is warehoused in your country it wouldn't take more than a few days, otherwise a week or more to come from Germany. You can get the part number from EPC here and the subscription is free to USA residents.

As a temporary fix, clean the flex pipe w/o removing it, get some high-temperature silicone sealer, smear a bunch over the leak, cut a piece of Coke can, put it over the flex, put a metal hose clamp or two over that and tighten. That will get you by until you can get a new piece of flex.

Looks easy, its a hard repair. Convenional approach is to remove both pieces of the exhaust manifold. There was some discussion on removing the just the front part of manifold then removing the studs from head. To replace, screw in studs with all new parts and manifold in place. Do not know if it can be done.

Removing the back part of the exhaust manifold may result in broken studs and the removal of the head to replace them.

Sounds like I may not be replacing it before making my trip then.

Jeremy5848's recommendation is a good one. I lived with one leaking for two years. Had some success wrapping fine wire into the crack. Other methods used were muffler cement, epoxy, exhaust wrap tape.
Thought about high temp (600-800 degrees) silicone hose, slit down side hose clamped into place.
Replaced joint when head gasket was done. Found a back exhaust stud broken.

I'd jury rig it for now.
Then when you have adequate time to maybe order other parts if need be, once you get in to it.

Here is my experience with flex pipes, yours may differ.

Thanks for the info guys, I think for now I am going to rig it -- I have some copper sealant left from Brian's EGR blocking plate kit, maybe I can use that. hehe

@Jeremy - thanks for the temp. fix idea!
@NJ300SDL thanks for the heads up on the heat rating and temp fix idea
@guage - thanks for sharing your experience!
