Which parts the lower part? The small one at the front of the engine?
If its the front one, hell, drain the oil, couple of bolts, and its off. I pulled 4 off at the junkyard in like 15 minutes.

I'm looking at my new gasket right now, and I'm counting 16 bolt holes. All the same, it looks like a pretty simple fix. I forgot to get a new drain plug washer. Hope my other one is still good. Maybe if I just put it on from the inside while I have the pan off it will seal better! (not) If it's not too frigid out, I'm going to replace the speedometer cable while I'm at it. Gotta flush the radiator, also.

would have been a breeze if PO hadn't stripped out a few of the allen heads...and if my replacement pan didn't have a crack in it that went unnoticed until it was full of fresh oil.

Ouch! I hate it when that happens! Even if it happens to somebody else.

Its easy, but annoying. I've done it twice so far....now that I have a 5mm allen SOCKET instead of an allen KEY it makes it WAY easier!

Fyi
I have been getting at least three calls per week from people afraid:
* the engine guts will fall out when the lower pan is removed. * they will take a bath/shower in used engine oil. * it requires special MB tools and training... |

Removing it was very easy, but I made sure to take my time putting the new one on so I didn't get any leaks...

This is the time to ask what may sound like a dumb question...Gasket sealer, or not on a Benz? One reason I always hated to change them on my GM's was the 4 part gasket\rubber set up. I finally quit doing them because I would always end up with a drip somewhere. So, should I or should I not use sealer on this??

I bet no one replaced the rubber bushings on the trans cooler lines. They may have a point about the guts falling out .. of the tranny. |

Not a 617
But I did on the 603. I still have seepage, and I'm not sure where it's coming from (somewhere near the trans but not the rear main)
It is time consuming and you need a hoist.
