25/30 is low for a 240D, especially with a 5-speed. I can get nearly that with an extra cylinder, a turbo and a 4-speed.

hmmmm. the fact that it's a euro may be the clue. don't forget, the 240D was even available with the 3.0 turbo 617 in europe... the 84 is also a good clue, as 83 was the last year for the 240 over here...

In 4th I have a 3.46 final ratio while in 5th he has a 2.94 ratio, at 3000rpm I do 65mph while he does 75mph in 5th. I top out at 107 mph while he (if his engine had the power) could do 118mph. The 5-speed has different internal ratios that almost makes up for the 3.69/3.46 difference in 1st, 2nd and reverse gears. 3.90-2.30-1.41-1.00 R3.6 3.82-2.20-1.40-1.00-0.81 R3.71 |

Interestingly, the ad was flagged. Wonder whether that's a known scam artist or something?

99% of the time cars listed with 5 speeds have 4 speeds and the sellers are dealers who don't know the difference. I actually had guy one claim, in disgust, that reverse was one of the speeds so his WAS a 5 speed though it only had 4 forward speeds

There was a gentleman just fishing to find the worth of his 240d with a five speed transmission about a year ago. He did not really want to sell it but was pretty persistant about finding it's value. Since he was also a long island resident I have to wonder if this was the same guy. There are not that many around so it is possible.
I kind of questioned his mental stability at the time and believe he might not have been aware that his methology was not a good way to establish the value. In the final anylasis it is what a buyer is willing to pay and a seller will accept. Everything else is just guesswork and he would not describe the general condition of the car. Other than the car was worth a fortune just because it had a five speed. Kind of like the general condition of the car in his mind was irrelevant to the price. Perhaps he can respond to the above on this site. I suspect it was here he asked his question before. Since I missed the listing does anyone know what he was asking? |

What do you have to back that up? I was only aware of om617.91X on the 240D

The only turbo 617 that Europe got was in the 300TD (or the C111)

I test drove a nice 83 240d and I could almost swear that it had a 5speed. It has been a long time ago and I might be incorrect.

I have read somewhere (I think it was in an English DIY repair manual for 123 diesels) that in England they sold a four-cylinder turbo diesel with 5-speed manual transmission. I don't see any reasons this couldn't be done, particularly since any variant pistons, sprayers, valves, etc, would probably come straight out of a 5-cyl. For a shade-tree job, my guess is that the big problem would be the exhaust manifold, although the engine compartment of a 123 with a 4-cyl is pretty roomy.
When replacing the clutch on my '83 Euro 5-cyl (natural)/5-speed I discovered that the clutch, slave cylinder, and as I remember even the flywheel pilot bearing was different from that in my '82 US 4-cyl/4-speed. |

An indian company makes a version of the 616 with a turbocharger, and there were aftermarket kits, but none came from the Mercedes factory that way.

The Indian version is just a legal blueprint copy, not a genuine Mercedes-built engine.
