KEROSENE - How much is too much?

So, where I live petro diesel is $4.79/gallon, B100 is $5.00/gallon and old fashioned kerosene is only $4.09/gallon. Highway tax issues aside, how much kerosene is too much to blend in with regular petro diesel to run my '86 190d 2.5 5spd?

I've heard some say 1/3 kerosene is safe, and others say you can mix 50/50 kerosene and petro diesel, but only to do that in the winter months. I live in God's country (the South) where summer temps average high 80's and low 90's from June-September - how much can I mix in without fear of heat and lubrication issues?

40/60 Kero/Diesel is about the strongest ratio I would use. You will need an additive to compensate for the lack of lubricity of Kero, and you will see a slight drop in power as Kero has a lower cetane. All said and done you are proabably back into the $4.79 a gallon range.

It was a great idea when Kero was $.80 a gallon...but even Veg Oil is $8 a gallon now.

Viscosity is not the issue with that, its lubrication.

I have read that as little as 2% biodiesel, SVO, or WVO added to straight K1 will make up for any lack of lubrication.

Keep in mind that kerosine is about 11-12% lower density than diesel, therefore it contains about 11-12% less energy per gallon. You should adjust your price accordingly.

Edit: based on your costs, the adjusted cost of the (untaxed) kerosine is about $4.50/gallon. Hardly worth it, even if you are planning on evading the taxes.

A person I know well, used aviation kero (fuel drains) for over 400,000kms , at 100% , had an IP fail due (maybe) to water in the kero, still not a bad mileage for free. The IP might have gone out for other reasons.

it ain't worth it.
tossing in a quart of VO to a tank of kero might protect the IP, but like stated above, the loss of power/mileage kinda offsets the savings you'd have.

Lower density means less energy? How does that math work? gasoline has less energy than molasses?

The volumetric energy content of oil based fuels is nearly proportional to the density (because they are all chemically similar). Gasoline actually has a little more energy per pound (called the heating value) than diesel, but diesel has significantly more energy per gallon (due to it's higher density). This is not exact, just a decent estimate.

Thanks for the discussion. It sounds like I'm stuck with $4.78/gallon with indefinite price increases unless I start collecting wvo or sow a soybean crop in the backyard.

Anybody know how to grow soybeans?

This is the sad reality of our state of affairs. The intelligent ones among us will adapt quickly, the rest will perish...well, at least their savings and gas guzzling lifestyles will perish....

I hear Venezuela has plenty of oil - maybe we should create a CIA report on their links to terror and invade?
