"Swish swish swish" noise at front of engine...?

What could this be? I just fired up my dad's '83 SD after it sat a little over a week while I replaced the t-stat....and now at the front of the engine from the vac pump/water pump area is a "swish swish swish swish...." noise while its running, especially noticeable at idle. My guess is one of the two pumps is having issues. Vac works fine....and temps are normal (especially with the new T-stat....no more 50C...now it gets to 83C like it should.) Soooo......should he be paranoid, or should we ignore it until something breaks.

When my water pump went it sounded like banging cans and was weeping fluid from the weep hole. His is not doing this. Its hard to tell where the sound is coming from exactly, but it has to be one of the two pumps.

Extra thought: His motor mounts make a very similar "swish/creak" noise when the car is powered down and it rocks side to side a couple times.....could the rocking of the engine on older mounts make this much noise? Its fairly loud.....so I was doubting it, but you never know....

Belts would be my bet, check for cracks and glazing.

This just started though, the belts are barely 2 years old. Maybe because I spilled a ton of coolant all over them while replacing the thermostat? We'll give it a while and see if it goes away.....

I ran the belts that came on my car for 55k and almost 4 years. I finally replaced them this past June when I replaced my alternator. They were already "old" when I got the car....and they lasted another 55k just fine....with no swishing noises.

His belts look good, no cracks, and they are not dried out or anything. They are Conti-Germany....and were put on in October 2005....

The noise seems too loud to be belts though.

Hmm, mine started making a similar noise the other day, and my first thought was the belts, but I haven't fully inspected them yet...they looked OK at first glance though. How long are the V-belts supposed to last? I'm sure mine are over 4 years old and they are also the German Continental brand.
