Hardwire Garage Door Opener DIY
Having wired my new radio directly to the four speakers in my W123 car, I had no further use for the factory "fader" control. I decided to build my garage door opener remote into the car and use that location for the pushbutton.
Since I didn't want to change the appearance of the console, I first looked for a switch that would mount in the factory hole. No go. Then I looked at the fader control itself. I discovered that the switch could be carefully pried apart, the guts removed, and a small rocker switch glued inside. The switch sits low enough in the console that it can't be pressed accidentally. I ran a length of small-gauge speaker wire from the new switch, through the console and into the glove compartment. This wire was then soldered onto the little PC board in the remote. The wire is attached with a mini-Molex plug and socket so the remote can be removed from the car. It works so well I did one for my wife's W124 also. The remote operates on a little 12 Volt battery so I could have wired it directly to the car's electrical system. I decided to stay with the internal battery so that I could take the remote out of the car and use it independently. The plug/socket also allows me to swap remotes with the W124 in case we decide to change places in the garage. Jeremy

A nice use of that space
I used the non utilized fader spot to run a cable through for auxiliary input

My fader switch is still there, but unused.
I plan on putting the USB port from my headunit there eventually....I just don't feel like prying all that off again right now. Too hot out.

I think thats gotta be the best idea for the W123 I've seen in a while. Gonna try that once I live somewhere long enough to justify it.
