So on one of my many trips back and forth from st. charles illinois to charleston Illinois (4 hours away) i noticed that thier is like a clunking noise comming from the front left tire area. This only happens when the steering wheel is straight (which is rarley cause it need to be alighned). But when i have the wheel turned even slightly from side to side, it usually goes away. My question is , could it be a bad controll arm? what dose a bad control arm sound like? im also thinking maybe it could be me needing some new front tires? also the tie rod on that side is just a tad bit loose, I barley noticed it myself until i really was jerking on it. could this also be the source of the sound? (don't worrie, the tie rod is on my list of "to-do)
thanks in advance

forgot to mention that when it makes that noise, it sounds like a chopper, or an unbalanced wheel, could it be the wheel? so when its going straight (or close to straight) the unbalanceness of it is making that noise? just outa curiosity

Make sure your wheel nuts are secure. There would be little side force to keep the wheel tight when going straight. Just remember having some strange noises over a wheel that the lug nuts where not really snug myself over the years. Not likely your problem but it pays to check the simplest things first. Under a centre no load position I also thought a loose inner or outer tie rod end might kind of chatter as mentioned by someone else. That I thought a good ideal by them although I have never experienced it myself.

It was the tires. all though i do need a tie rod end and an alignment. I had new tires put on and.... WOW..... all the noise issues went away, and the car now handles so much better.
Thanks all for all your input

With that bad tie rod, expect that to happen again, as there is enought play in the suspension components to allow movement that is not supposed to be there.
