Valve Adjustment Wrenches...who's got them?

Over the weekend I adjusted the valves on my 82 300D without the special 14mm wrench with the 90 degree angle or the valve spring holder tool. Is there a place where I can get these parts at a reasonable price? I saw some on ebay for $80+. A little expensive in my opinion.

In most cases you can do without the valve holder. Just the two offset wrenches have worked fine for me. Hazet's are $32.50 each at Samstag Sales.

Somehwere on this forum, there are pics of the demensions of the wrenches. Several people have bought long necks, and torched them so they can bend. Otherwise, dieselgiant.com has them only slightly cheaper than what you quoted.

I didn't have the specific wrenches and the hole time I was adjusting the valves I was wishing I did have them. Torching and bending might be an option.

Thumbs up

I have found after a few uses, the Hazet work just a bit easier in tight spots over the bent ones. For the cash you can't complain on the bent.

Just buy some cheapo 14mm from AZ and bend them yourself. The spring holder is the only one that I found to help. I have done three valve jobs now with 1 bent long handled 14mm and a regular one. Found out my husky branded ones were a bit better quality than the AZ thing just snapped.

A Hazet won't do that. Plus the heads are thinner than a regular confination wrench.

A few minutes of contact with concrete seemed to take care of that issue. Hazets are going to be better don't get me wrong. My setup cost less than $5.

I'm certainly no MB valve adjustment expert (I've just done one so far), but I found that I had no issues when I used a regular 14mm Craftsman with a stubby GearWrench. The GearWrench has a thin enough head and is short enough that I only had to flex the injector bleed (?) hoses a bit.

Hazet #2769 14 mm valve adjustment wrenchs!

If you decide you want the proper Hazet wrenches and you want to go used. I have a pair of the 14 mm Hazet #2769 wrenches in excellent condition, they are also marked with the MB star and 615 589 00 01 00. The only issue is a previous owner's name scribed in the back or underside of the handles. I'd like to get $50 for the pair and I'll include USPS Priority Mail shipping to the lower 48, just let me know if your interested, good luck!

These wrenches have been sold, thank you very much!

I bought the ones from dieselgiant, they worked great...did the whole adjustment process in about 40-50 mins or so from opening to closing the hood, and it was my first time doing one! All exhaust and one intake were tight, the rest of the intake valves were still to spec.

I personally am not interested in doing valves w/o the bent wrenches. It is possible, but the headache isn't worth it. Without the bent I remember just giving up on the rearmost valve because it was too hard to reach. I bought a set used Hazet off ebay about 4 years ago. About $45 dollars including shipping. I had to watch the auctions for about 2 weeks to find a set at that price.

Although it sounds like I'm in the minority, I have needed the spring holder a couple of times - specifically the first couple of times I adjusted the clearances. Now that I've been in there a few times it goes quickly and I haven't needed it.
