Crankshaft alignment pins............
Upon reinstalling the crank balancer on my 617, it seems that the alignment pins grew some in width. The pin position on my engine is slightly offset so I don't have the problem of installing the balancer 180 degrees off. As I was tightening & checking for proper alignment, when it finally all came together, the pins seem to have their edges shredded some-like a few thousands of an inch. Talk about a tight fit! I checked the crank timing with the opening of the valves per the manual & it's right on the money-so I guess I'm happy!?
Just don't like to see stuff like this when putting an engine together. Paul.

I had this same problem on my 82 300dt. My engine had sheared these pins in half soI had to put the new pins in a drill and sand them down a tiny bit to make them fit without tearing them up. Now the car will not start. Where in the manual did you find the procedure to check the timing that way?

There may be a few places. Many procedures overlap one another. I found one at replacing the camshaft. Section 05-220 on the first page. It shows timing at a 2mm valve lift. This would be for cyl 1. I went off of the intake valve opening after top dead center. When it has opened a distance of 2mm, the balancer should read 9 degrees after top dead center (11 degrees with used timing chain). I believe something as simple as a haynes manual has a page on this also.
The notch on the compensating washer near the front of the camshaft is close, but it's main purpose is for aiding in chain, cam or gear replacement. To make sure you're not a tooth off in valve timing. I have a new chain & it also worked out good for me. When the notch was perfectly aligned with the line on the front cam tower, my balancer was at top dead center on the compression stroke. Hope this helps, Paul.

Had the same thing happen when I replaced the front seal. Checked with the W123 mechanic at the dealer and he said that it was fine. Usually happens when you remove and replace the balancer.

I feel better now, thanks Dave. Is that you in the picture? I used to work as a mechanic for Airtran Airways, Paul.
