Will a 1980 eng/trans fit a 1981?

Will the engine and/or transmission from a 1980 300SD fit in a 1981 300SD?

Inquiring mind needs to know! Thanks upfront for all your replies.

It should. Compare the oil pans. I know the later model oil pan won't work in the W116 chassis.

Just for an FYI, are the arms for the motor mounts the same?

Thanks for the replies!

I'm not going to have a chance to eye ball the pan or the motor mounts as I'm looking at buying the 116 with a mind towards eventually putting the drivetrain in my 123. The tranny in the 123 slips and the engine is old (372k) so I'm looking down the road a bit, so to speak. Also, I thought it would be fun to drive a 116 for a while.

No

No they won't I have a 1980 and a 1981 300sd and they are different as far as the trans goes. The engines have minor diffs like linkages and can be overcome but the trans from the 1980 is like a 240d trans and the 1981 trans is much heavier and larger.

tuxkwb, that's just the information I needed! I was ready to either bid on a tranny or buy the 116. I still might buy the 116 but not with an eye towards swapping drivetrains.

Thanks!

Randy
