What Could Cause This...

I am looking at this 83-300SD on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=290005786717&ih=019&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

This statement is what concerns me:

Car runs and drives excellent. The motor runs excellent. The transmission shifts well. A/C does not work. Stereo turns on but acts funny/sporatic. Front power windows OK, rear windows have broken regulators.

Power vacuum locks work. Tires all around in good shape. Car has a few scratches as pictured. Floormats in good condition. Driver power seat does work. Sunroof works fine. Steering & suspension excellent. Left foglight broken. When at a stop and accelerating, the car feels like you are going over rumble strips until you get to about 25 MPH.

What are the possible causes for such rumble at stop and initial acceleration and should one consider this car? Could it be the damper pin?

Thanks, Don

Why take the chance? Find a good one, not a wildcard.

"Runs and drives excellent" but when at a stop and accelerates it does what? Two conflicting statements; bad idea to buy.

It could be collapsed engine mounts.
Looks like someone 'keyed' the passenger side.

drive shaft center bearing

I'm with OMEGAMAN - it sounds exactly like the driveshaft center bearing is out and I hope they don't drive it too much in the meantime before renewing it or there could be much more damage.

If it was me I'd go for it if the price doesn't break $3K. The renewal of the driveshaft bearings and flexdisks will cost not quite $200 in parts and some elbow grease.

Go for it!

I don't think that would be an issue at idle.

My W126 ('90 350 SDL) sounded like it was going over rumble strips when I first accelerated until I got some speed. Turned out to be the serpentine belt idler pulley was vibrating and causing the rumble. The shock for the idler pulley has a rubber bushing and it wears out over time.
