What's a Dipstick Tool

I've seen a couple of posts referring to "Dipstick tools" for newer Mercedes Benz's, not just Diesels. What do people mean by that? Dont these things come with dipsticks anymore? How does one measure oil levels?

- Peter.

A Dipstick Tool is some ******* that pontificates on one thing Friday, changes his mind on Saturday, emails you on Sunday, then expects everything to be corrected by Monday. That's a Dipstick Tool in my opinion.
Actually a dipstick tool would be the tranny fluid level dipstick that is absent on newer MB cars due to their 'sealed for life' transmissions. Should you order this one, be sure to get another filler tube seal/cap.

IIRC, it was around $37 and is required on newers cars to check A/T fluid level.

And now Mercedes does the 'dip stick tool' for engine oil. That seems a bit arrogant to me the M-B's part. By having a dipstick you can not only check the level, but also see if there is something starting to mix in the oil that should not be there. i.e. coolant

Wha? Dipstick tool for the engine oil as well? Is there some kinda electronic doo-dad that quantifies the engine oil level somehow? That seems kind of dangerous...

Many new cars have an electrical oil level check. I don't care if it is there, but give me a dipstick.

Very true.

Many vehicles have an electric low oil monitor, and the ones that were on the Ford Pickups I owned from the late 80's to early 90's all had them. And they worked just really great. It is really a simple little gadget mounted in the oil pan and if the engine sits for a little time when it is 1 quart low the light comes on when restarting. Hard to go wrong with that little device. But I still think every engine should have a dipstick as well as every automatic transmission. I think that the manufactures sometimes forget the vehicle is new only once.

On the newer ones, such as my friends sisters 2005 CLK320 you check the oil level via the dash display. Personly I would like such a feature provided they still give you an option of a traditional dispstick.

Sometimes I just don't feel like popping the hood.

Why does one even need a dipstick on the trans? If it doesn't leak where would the fluid go?

But if it did leak and you noticed a dime sized puddle after a 400 mile trip, was that the first 10 drops of fluid or the last 10 drops.

I bought the silly thing and have it out in the shop. Try to remember to drag it along on trips. I am really old school and like the non-electronic era, but want all the safety gear for my family, so the '99 is fine.

IIRC, you also need to use it in conjunction with SDS to get the right moment to check the level.
