Fiber optic radio systems

OK-

From what I gather on this site, it seems like the fiber optic cables used in newer MBs mean that the components (CD changers etc) will NOT work in the older models.

I don't see why one cant just purchase some fiber optic cable and hook things up.

I know VERY little about MB stereos but I am trying to learn.

This site here sells the FO cable:

http://www.mbdoctor.com/shop/index.php?cPath=26&osCsid=1d20a335c5a282fd5a9a700e5d005ec5

Can someone educate me?

in theory, you're correct. fiber cable is fiber cable. i believe the devil is in the
details, i.e. they terminate at proprietary plugs so just be sure you have the MB
plugs and it should be fine. i've not had the chance to look/handle D2B vs MOST
so unsure how they compare/differ.

I basically want to add the factory amp to the 3302 radio I bought (out of '99 e320)

On back of radio are connections for the FO cables.

I keep reading about needing a "wake up signal", but I don't think this was part of the '99 210 system. I say this because ignition and illumination for this model radio are done the traditional way, rather than in the 'can system'.

see http://www.beckerautosound.com/mercedes_year_model.html for differences between 99 and 2000+ harnesses.

Therefore, I would like to just run a cable and bolt the amp to my trunk.

I know I can buy a CD player at best buy for $99.00, but that's not a real project.

OK, the 3302 is in my 300SE.

Bolts up and matches the interior perfectly.

Now, I want to add an amplifier--it's not loud enough.

Must I stick with the Bose amp that came with the radio originally in the 1999 e320?

What are my options here?

Im thinking about doing this as well to my 95 E300, Using the radio from my 1999 E300...I like how my 99 head unit has a telephone keypad and would like to put this whole apparatus in my 95 e300.....Is it possible to just run the fiber cable from the head unit to the cd changer and have it work? Do you need the amp in order for all of this to work? Could you create a Fiber loop with a bluetooth unit (such as the argos) along with the cd changer without the need for an amp? I know a forum member was able to put a 1999 head unit in a 98, not sure if he just ran the fiber cable from the headunit to the cd changer.

You need the amp and the audio gateway, then you must use SDS to code all this to work properly

OK. That's what I suspected.

I'll just put this radio (the 3302) in my 300D.

Looks like I'll go after a becker monza 7882 on ebay.de.

It appears the later beckers such as the 7882 and the 7990 etc have "4x18W RMS" and 4x30W power.

Will this be enough to sound decent without an amp?

Thanks

Question... Is this entire quest based on the desire for increase volume levels? If so, you may want to look in to more efficient speakers. I don''t know the efficiency of the speakers you're using now, but I think you may very well find a more efficient speaker that would solve the volume problem.

Thanks for the info Husk.

Can a becker 1492 or 1692 accept an aftermarket amplifier?

My goal is for the stereo to look stock--preferably MB branded--and have the capability to play MP3s with an aux input (done by the becker shop). It seems that all the MB branded radios are designed to work with an amp...I want to add an amplifier.

Thanks

Also-

the audio 10--I've read that this unit needs to be hooked up to SDS to trick it into thinking its the only unit on the D2B loop. Is this correct?

yes you can use an aftermarket amp with the 1492 and 1692, you will have to connect PIN A5 to the amp trigger on the amp for it to work, the antenna will always be up (in cassette mode/cd mode etc)

Thanks Husk.

I think I will just go with the Becker 7990.

Although it is a $400 radio, and must be purchased in Europe, it may be cheaper in the long run (ie, putting together a system with amps, ipod adapter etc).

I wish MB had made their radios fully and easily backwards compatible.
