Exhaust Manifold Help (450 SEL)
I broke an exhaust manifold, rt. side on my 74 450 SEL. Went to the jkyd, found a 74 and pulled the rt. exhaust manifold.
Problem is that the header pipe end of my car's exhaust man. is female The one I pulled is male. I should have known better with Mercedes constantly changing parts. I'm not sure either car is original, but maybe what happened is when the manifolds changed from the weird 75 or 75-76 only integrated cataylitic converter this male-female thing happened. HELP? Also, can you weld repair a broken exhaust manifold? |

iron is tricky to weld, it takes the correct rod and some skill. its not generally a permanent fix either, although that depends on where and how it cracked. try a muffler shop, or a hot rod shop, or anyplace that does welding

Just got back from a muffler shop. They couldn't weld it.
Sure could use some help with the male- female exhaust end differences I mentioned above to see what years of the 73-80 SEL models would be the same as the one I had on my car which is female on the exh manifold and male on the header pipe. |

can you go back and get the front of the pipe from the car you got the manifold from? that sounds complex to me too, for some reason?

I can- but what is simplest for me and would involve no towing to a shop to change the header pipe etc. would be if someone knows the different year applications of this manifold. Do the early years have the male or female end (73-74)- Do the later yrs.(77-80) have the male or female end? I know the 75's and 76's are vastly different with an integrated catalytic converter.
Has anyone changed an exhaust manifold that knows the answer.? |

Somewhere on those two manifolds are part numbers. Post them. -CTH

Excellent idea. I recorded the part nos. as best I could read them (a couple of characters are worn down or not quite perfect for some reson)
The one I need to match which has what I call the female manifold end has one line on the rear section that reads: 3101 MOCR WI1 117 142 in one line, and under that line circled 910X. The front two small sections read 3204 and 2604. This is the broken one I would like to match. The other one I grabbed at the yard which has what I call the male manifold end has 117 1427 01 Mercedes Benz in one line followed by what looks like 8r4 (but those last 3 nos. are very hard to read.) The front 2 small sections are 3801 and 3701. Can I assume that the later part nos. came from a later car? If that's so, then maybe the jkyd car I took the manifold from had had a later one put on with the header pipe changed.? Any help on these semi-correct at least part nos. would be appreciated. |

Idea:
There's a '74 450SE in the junkyard. I want the left (driver's) manifold but the right (pass) is 1-piece, the 108's is 2 (and mine are fine). If you like, I can check the one in the junkyard and, if it's right, I can grab it... shouldn't be over $50...

Tomguy- thanks! If its easy to check out that would be great.
The one that was on my 74 has a "female" end on the rear. The one that I grabbed off a 74 at a junkyard here in L.A. had a "male" end, meaning I have to have the header pipe cut, changed and welded. I'm not sure what the original setup was. If you find it's good, I ought to get it from you as a spare anyway. It seems like the right side exh manifold is susceptible to cracking and breaking on my car the way the rest of the exhaust system is built if I bottom out. |
